would you have to thinner down Tamiya paint so you can use them with an airbrush?

Yes, otherwise it would be too thick..

you can airbrush it as it is, i have many times especialy with the XF range. but you need to run the needle further in (more open) and have the pressure a bit higher. its ok with flat paints but not too great with gloss.
i would suggest 2 parts paint to one part tamiya thinner to get a decent consitancy

the easiest thing to remember ... when mixing paint for an airbrush .. you want it just a little thicker then milk ... (not by much)
