Resetting Dealer Installed Alarm

I accidently left my key on overnight and the battery ran down. When we have replaced the battery or charged it in the past, I just click the remote key control and all is ok. This time I have misplaced that key fob. So the truck will not start. It is a dealer installed GM Goodwrench system. The truck is 75 miles from here, so if I cannot find that key alarm deactivator, is there anyway to bypass it? The switch under the dash makes no difference regardless of the position, so I just had to undo the battery cables to buy me time to find out an answer.

Usually you just undo the kick panel and you'll see the brain. Just unplug it. IF that still doesn't work, just bypass the starter kill. IT will be hooked up to either a yellow or purple wire.

WE UNPLUGGED A "THREE PRONGED BLACK BOX", ABOUT THE SIZE OF A SMALL MATCH BOX THAT I ASSUME WAS THE BRAIN YOU ARE MENTIONING? IT MADE THE NOISE STOP BUT DID NOT RESET THE TRUCK IGNITION SO WE PLUGGED IT BACK IN. SORRY TO SOUND DUMB :) BUT HOW WOULD BYPASSING THE STARTER KILL WIRE BE ACCOMPLISHED? MY HUSBAND IS MORE KNOWLEGABLE THAN I AM BUT SINCE THE TRUCK HAD TO BE LEFT SO FAR FROM HERE AND THERE IS NO PC CONNECTION ONSITE, I NEED TO COVER MY BASES BEFORE WE LEAVE THIS WEEKEND. What I said is just a quick fix so you can ge the truck home. Usually these have a very simple starter kill switch. Bypass that and the truck will start. Too bad you do not know where the valet switch is and how to disarm it using it.

i would just call the dealer and ask them how to get it going. or just buy another key fob.

I was told by a co worker that there would be an extra wire going to the hot battery post and to take that aloose. If this may be the case, is there a backup power supply like on a computer so info wont be lost on dealer installed systems? If the starter/ignition is already disengaged, would disconnecting this wire reset the ignition or leave disabled.

I am calling the dealer today to see if possible to get a key fob but I figured it was set with different signals like a garage door opener is. So far I haven't found mine.

Well its entirely possible that once you get the key fob that it will need to be programmed to the alarm.

When you say dealer installed alarm, I am thinking factory alarm which makes the programming a breeze (see the programming instructions on this site) but if it really is a dealer installed alarm (like a viper or maybe even a GM aftermarket alarm), you need to ask the dealer how to get it programmed to the car cause I do not know.

did you buy the car new or get it used? If you got it new, then you'd know what knind of alarm it is. if you got it used, it could be aftermarket or dealer installed.

what brand name was on the remote? did it look like a factory remote (search ebay for you year make and model to compare)?

I got the truck used and the man we got it from stated he had had the system put on. so that leads me to think it is after market I suppose it is possible he meant he ordered it with it on it. as he was orig owner. the key fob was an unsophisticated square. the only unit I find on ebay, the key fob is similar. the actual unit in the truck says GM Goodwrench. I didnt find a serial etc number on it.

If that's the case, that's those real crappy old Code Alarm pieces GM bought. I'd trash it myself.

don't these alarms disable the starter or ignition by grounding the starter solenoid (at least, thats the way more conventional alarms work). If thats the case, the by unplugging the alarm box should remove the groun and allow the car to start.

I got the truck started just fine. We had several options and this was the one we tried first and it workd. In case anyone else gets in my predicament and posts here. You can tell to them unhook the ground wire on the battery, turn on the ignition key, after leaving the ground off for 30 + seconds, rehook it, and you are good to go. Whew.
