clearing coat

i know most of you can clear coat OVER decals..... just HOW???

i tried on one today.... i had no more decal....

is there a trick to it? do i let it dry for a long time? do i do it while its wet? ??

plz....help?

or is it just luck whether it works? or do i hold the can VERY FAR AWAY (off note, can clear coat get orange peel)

First thing you should do when you get a chance is read the FAQ section about clearcoats. To answer you though, a lot of factors come into play regarding decals and clearcoat such as the type of clear, maker of the decals, and how the clear is applied. Tamiya clear is excellent but you have to be very careful about which decals you use under their(Tamiya) clear. Decals should be dry for at least a week before you clear them (I wait that long). Usuallythe first coats of clear should be misted over the decals in order to minimize the chance of them being eaten by the clear. let the first few mist coats dry for a couple of days then you can try to cover them with regular coats. :smile: I'm no professional but this is the method I use for my models. i couldnt agree more tonio about the misting of the laquer.
you have to do that realy with any kind of clear coat. i could tell you about hundreds of little problems spraying clear coat has caused!

i find the best way to clear coat decals especaly tamiya is not to use aerosol cans or tamiya clear sprays. but to use an airbrush loaded with two parts tamiya X22 clear and one part tamiya X20a arylic thinner. low pressure and mist away, build up four or five mist coats. then spray your wet coats after its dry. plus at about £1 a pot of X22 its a darn sight cheaper than using sprays. also you can spray the tamiya clear over the top of X22 if you so desire.
