Alternator Belt

Our car stopped dead, we pushed it to a gas station, and the alternator belt broke. They replaced the belt and we drove home. The next day we noticed it was hard to steer. We looked at the belt and it had started to unravel. What's wrong. Any help would be appreciated. We live in the Trinity Alps, and we need the car. T
