Ford Escort 93 rear noise when turning left

I have a Ford Escort Zetec 1.6 93/L car (82000 miles). I had my middle and rear exhaust sections replaced about a month ago. Sometimes now when I do reasonably tight left turns a noise can be heard from what seems to be the rear left of the car. I did not notice it until recently. It is a scraping sound. I do not have mud guards at the back so it cannot be those hitting the ground. Is it likely to be the exhaust or could it be the suspension wearing out or a wheel bearing? It doesn’t do it when I turn right.

Many thanks

Howard

check rear wheel bearings/and hub tightness.

I checked both rear wheels and they are firmly fixed to the hub. There is also no play when grasping them in 12-6 and 3-9 o’clock positions. Both spin freely so I do not think it is the bearings.

Standing at the rear of the vehicle I noticed the exhaust pipe hits the fuel tank if I move the tail pipe to the right. I found it to be where the mid section joins the rear section. I put some foam padding around the area, did a road test and the noise had disappeared. Sometime later the foam fell out and the noise came back. I think the scraping was caused by the exhaust hitting the heat shield.

Therefore am I in my rights to take the car back to the garage and get them to mount the exhaust more centrally so it does not make a noise when I go round left hand corners? The old one never made a noise.

Thanks Howard
