Stuck in 'Sport Shift'?

We have a 90 Accord EXR that appears to be stuck in 'sport shift'.
The green 'S' lighton the dash is on and won't reset.
Pressing the Sport Shift button on the shifter actually pushes the button in or out but has no effect on the dash shift light.
Also, the transmission does not seem to be changing gears.
I don't know if this problem is related but when I start the car there is a very fast clicking sound that appears to be coming from the left side of the dash. While in park, If I step on the brake pedal it stops, let go of the brake pedal and it starts again, switch into any gear and it stops.
Thank you very much for any assistance!
Regards,
Allan C.

the fast clicking sound you here can be your lifters, injectors, or the knock that occurs. this happens with the grade of gas you put in. next time you fill up put in a higher octane grade and you will see some difference if it works. as for the tranny, when was the last time you had your tranny flushed and filled? check out the fluid and see if its black.

I don't know when it was last flushed, however, I could check past invoices.
Is it supposed to be black or ....?
TIA.

tranny fluid should never be brown or black it should always be kinda like a ruby red color. when its brown make plans to change fluid just dont wait until it turns black your tranny will not be operating as well

We will be taking the car into the Honda dealership (probably Tuesday).
I will post the findings here.
Tks again.

I know the problem....
It's a problem with one of the transmission componets, there i was a recall on it MANY years ago, and Unfortunaly you car is problay way pass the cut off date for a free fix.
Describe to them the buzzing under the dashboard and the sport light, and dealership should know right a way what to fix.
I had mine done at the dealership, and they knew what it was right a way what it was when i described the problem, lucky for me i was covered under the recall.
See if you can do some research on the web ahead of time for that recall,
good luck.

Where should I search and for what keywords?
Also, would you happen to know what was involved in the recall?
Thanks very much!

sorry i wish i could tell you more, but back then i wasn't too in to my accord, so i really didn't pay attetion to what they said :(
Do a search on the web for "+accord +90 +recall" and see what you find.
Or, maybe someone can post a link to a site that contains some info.
As for the problem, I belive it's not the actual transmission it self. which ofcourse is good news, But i think it might be one of the eletrical componets that controls the shifting for the automatic transmission.
sorry I didn't have more info for ya, but do the search and post if you find any thing.

I wonder if this is it
TSB 90039 DEC 90 A/T - 'S' Indicator On, No Downshift
I have read twice in the past day something about Honda America not allowing individual consumers to access recall information.

It was the 'main replay' for the transmission.

I told the Honda dealer about the recall you mentioned when we brought the car in.
He did not remark.
I told him about a technical service bulletin that I found (I think you were the one who suggested searching the net).
He said that he didn't know at that time.
The bottom line is that he wouldn't commit.
The prices in CDN$:
Part about $80, labour 1 hour 85$, diagnostic about 85$.
By the time you add tax it was close to $300.
He said that he could not even run the diags initially due to the fact that since the main relay was blown there was no power going to some of the components they wanted to test.
Actually, my better half was very relieved since she was thinking big $ for a new or refurb transmission.
On the other hand, when I heard that loud fast clicking from the dash area I knew that the problem should be very obvious to Honda.
It's not like the problem was going to go away when the doctor saw the patient.
Tks once again for your suggestions!

Tks once again for your suggestions! I have a 90/91 Honda with the Same problem and am really happy to find this thread, I'd like to know the name of the "part"..was it the transmission computer located under the passenger floor? There is a transmission computer located under the carpet on the passenger side floorboard. I went ahead and ordered one (part #28100-PXO-823-M1 , 3LX) since they are not very expensive but was still hopeing to hear from someone who has had an experience with this issue first hand.
Thanks for any reply

Milo,
We didn't actually see the dealer do the work.
We are in Canada so I don't know if the part #'s are the same.
The part is the 'Relay Assembly, Main' part 39400-SM4-003.
I really hope this helps.
Please let me know!

K, what we found in this case was the Trans Computer under the passenger kick panel to be the problem.
It's true the "Relay Main" plays a role and can cause the same symptoms.
It is a dual relay and controls the fuel pump, ecm, fuel injectors and the oxy sensor.

The "relay assembly" is not the computer on the passenger floor which is called "TCM", Transmission Control Module.
I replaced the TCM on my 92 Accord couple months ago. Problem: the D4 light keeps on no matter what, and no auto shift, I have to manually shift to second gear when taking off. But there is no clicking sound. Runs great at high speed. 2 resistors burnt in the TCM due to a leaking and dry capacitor. I bought one from the internet. Car runs great since.

Any chance of you faxing your repair sheet to me?
The thing is, EXACTLY the problems you had, are what happened to my car today. It started clicking in the left dash - the green "S" light came on - it won't shift, unless I do it manually - and then it feels like it's going from 2nd to 3rd only... but the clicking is the tell-tale sign that we have/had the same problem.
You can e-mail me at [email protected] if you'd like I know I'd sure appreciate it --- I hate to think what our current dealers in this area would nail me for in "diagnostic" charges when they should know IMMEDIATELY what this problem is without even checking!
Thanks man, please drop me an e-mail if you see this post. I see that you have your e-mail link turned off on this site.

I had the same problem,,Sports mode on all the time and Transmission not changing gear,,So i took out the Automatic Transmission Control Unit(situated passengers side under the carpet,,use a 10mm deep socket the remove plate) and found that resistor 41 + 42 had blown just like this persons:

http://205.214.86.119/images/misc/HondaATControllerCloseup.jpg
I have tried replacing the resistors with 500ohms but it didnt work, then i linked them out with just wire and everything came back to life.I will have to play around until i get the correct values for the resistors because i dont want to leave just wires coz it may cause other problems.
So Honda wanted £550 for a new unit and they were out of stock
The scrappy wanted £60
I fixed mine for nothing :O))))

I just received notification today (2004/12/18) about the last message in the thread.
Did you still want a copy of the work order?

Thats a new one on me. The part replaced was thd main relay which controls the ECU, fuel pump, i.yinjectors
mpumas
12-20-2004, 01:16 PM
That is a new fix for me. The main relay powers the ECU, fuel pump, fuel injectors and O2 sensor heater. I see no connection between it and the transmission problem. And if it were the relay, the car should not start. Anybody else have any ideas?
