83 Toyota Pickup Charging problems

I have an '83 P/?U 22R that won't charge. I relaced the voltage regulator, and the parts place tested the alternator after I pulled it, and told me it was good. According to the car volt meter, I'm only putting out 8 volts, so eventually, the battery goes dead and the truck dies. If I'm using the lights etc., alot, it dies sooner. The battery is nearly new. After it dies, I recharege it and replace it, then it dies again after a week or so.

Any suggestions????

much appreciated!!!!!!!!!

Since your battery is still new, take it back and have them check it...if it's bad, they should pro-rate it and sell you another one at a lot cheaper price. But before you do, try charging it again, install it and start it up. Use a handheld voltmeter and check the battery to see if it's getting charged. 13.5 volts or more should be adequate. You may want to check a service manual, like Chilton's or Haynes. I had an 83 and a 79 pickup a few years back, but I can't remember if the voltage regulator is adjustable, which you may need to adjust, if it is adjustable. Hoping that your alternator and battery are ok, the regulator may be the culprit. But you do need a fully charged battery before any testing is done, good luck :).

3 years ago I had the exact same problem with my 83.The parts store said the alternator was good. After much screwing around I got a different alternator and installed it. To this day I have had no further problems.

had the same problem a few years back, turned out there was a bad wire in the charging system. Can't remember which one

I would definately check out what a1 said, but in my opinion I would say that it is your alternator, and just in case, make sure you have a good connection on the terminals.
Cheers!
