so i was drving my 00 integra Ls in a rain storm today and just to be curious i took off my splash guard and my filter on my aem cai was soaked..... is there a chance that i could have sucked up some water?????

Did the motor cut out, sputter or shut off? If not then you got lucky. Did it get submerged or did it just get water thrown up on it from the tire?

i am pretty sure it did not submerge, ino that is when you get hydrolock is when the tip submerges so ovioded all puddles. no the engine did not cut off or stutter, i would not be sitting here if it did id still be sitting in my car on the road probly, it's just that i wonder some water must still be able to get in, even if u dont submerge in a puddle. i dont know its probly me just being paranoid.

Well my opinon on CAI's are that they are not worth the worring and headache when something bad happens. You might want to consider changing you rintake or cutting it so that you can switch it to a short ram when it rains. Just some suggestions.

Well the air bypass valve won't keep the water that gets on the filter from being sucked in. The bypass valve just opens when the filter is submerged.

well supposedly water around the filter is not supposed to be sucked up.

If the oil soaked cotton is wet with water then it will suck up some water. The oil reples the water and the air rushing in will just carry some of it into the motor. Not alot, but some non the less.

if the filter is submerged, your screwed. this is because gas is compressible, and liquid is not. if more water is sucked into the cylinder than space at the piston's TDC, the piston will stop, because it cant compress the water.
read this for more info. pretty much, if your engine didnt explode or lock up, then your fine. but definately put that splash guard on, or get an aem bypass valve.

yeah h20 is bad when it gets into the engine.

You probably only got your filter really dirty(wet roads and puddles aren't clean) but hopefully not to the point were so much crap was slung at the filter that its damaged now.
Water is not entirley bad for a motor. Water Injection can be used on turbocharger vehicles to a good benefit. Rally cars use them for added cooling.

Water is not entirley bad for a motor. Water Injection can be used on turbocharger vehicles to a good benefit. Rally cars use them for added cooling.
really...so trickles are water are not as bad as we have been led to believe? i know i read the instuctions on the bypass valve and it only mentions completely submerbed "cones". i would think that this coeinsides with what you say,the little bit of water that would be inducted from a wet cone would not do damage only a "cone" that was primaraly inducting water...like if it were completely submerged in say a puddle, would be cause for seriouse consern. right? or in need of some revision.

gulps of water are baaaad, but i'm pretty sure you'd find out real quick if enough water was sucked into the engine to 'hydrolock' it.

I wouldn't worry about the filter being wet. Generally any water in your combustion mixture is bad, it doesn't burn, and is very hard to compress. But the few dropless that will be sucked up thru a wet filter aren't anything to write home about. If you were screwed, you know it already. :)

Let's just clarify something here on the 'water injection' thing and WRC cars.
The water injection on WRC cars sprays water across the intercooler keeping the intercooler cooler, this water at no point comes into contact with the air flow into the engine, it is on the exterior of the tubes the air is flowing through and keeps the tubes cooler by evaporation.
The guy is not asking about water injection on turbocharged engines, he is asking about water getting sucked up into his standard air intake.

water injection goes INTO your chargepipe, usually it's a 50/50 water/methanol mix the water goes into your intake tract to lower charge temps and the methanol does the same, only it ups octane (and burns) as a matter of fact, wter injection will actaully clean your motor a little (helps kind of "steam clean" carbon buildup away) water sprayers on the intercooler are also used but you're mistaken if you think thats what water injection is. check out the setup that vortech and aquamist(?) have, I personally am in the midst of building myself a homemade water injection kit. anyway, nm
