Need Major Help On My Cavalier

Hey guys, I got some problems on my cavalier I was hoping someone can tell me how to fix.

The 5th gear, and reverse has just shot out on me, I don't know whether its the trans itself or something is with my shifter.

The car overheats alot, after about 15 miles. Now has hard time starting, and when I drive it, it stalls often. And when I release the gas it starts to "put put" then dies out.

I have alot of assumptions but no direct answers, if anyone can help it will be apprecaited.

try checking the compression in all cylinders

could be possible head gasket.
The two biggest problems with these cars is timing chain and head gaskets which then leads to other problems.as for overheating that may have caused the head gasket to have a small hair line fracture might want to also change the thermostat.. Hope this is some help
