turn signal problem

Just bought our daughter a 1996 Civic LX for Christmas. The steering seemed a little stiff, which I attributed to high mileage. However, she came home from school and said the car steers much easier, but now her turn signals won't cancel. Is there any solution without replacing the turn signal/headlights switch? If I've got to replace the switch, is it a Honda-specific part?
This is my first Honda, so please be gentle.
Thanks,
Rainman

Welcome to AF!
Replacing the turn signal cancel cam should do the trick, it is a dealer only part or junkyard.

Thanks Jackassi. Wanted to get some idea of what job I had ahead before I started taking the steering column panels apart. Got a friend with a couple of salvage yards. I'll give him a call. If I unhook the battery and wait five minutes, I should be OK with the air bags, right?

You'll be fine with the air bags with the battery disconnected. When working in that area don't put your face right by the steering in case it were to go off, fat chance but if it did, it could break your neck. They deploy @ +/-200mph
If it has a stock anti-theft radio, make sure you have the code before disconnecting the battery. If no code, check all removeable covers(glove box, center console, fuse panel covers(inside & under hood) for a little white sticker containing the serial# & 5 digit radio code. Still no luck, call the dealer, they may have it in history. No luck again, it's time for you or the dealer to remove the radio - dealer will charge 1.0hr of labor for this to access the serial# needed to gain the code. If you pull the radio yourself, make sure to bring the radio & car to the dealer - most dealers won't give you a code over the phone based off the serial# - most also won't give you the code if you bring the radio only. That all would defeat the "anti-theft"

The drivers door is a little messed up from the same accident - I call idiotic move. Somebody pulled out while I was goin' 60mph. It could have been really bad, I guess. Just waitin' to get her in the body shop to get a pretty again.

Finally got around to job of replacing turn signal cancel cam. Not difficult, just time-consuming to make sure I didn't screw up the SRS air-bag system. Part from Honda cost me $12. Took me a couple of hours because I had to pull the steering wheel back off and move it one notch. Used White-out to index the steering wheel, which wasn't precise enough.
Anyway, the signals now cancel.
Thanks for the help, guys.
