I have a 92 grand prix se. The power window on the driver's side has stoppped working. This was a gradual thing. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. Now it's doing NOTHING! The mirror switch is also not working correctly. Should I replace the switch assembly? Any advice would be appreciated. thanks!

You need to do some diagnostic work before you throw parts at it and spend money you don't need to spend. The window motor needs 12V to go up and down. Buy a 12$ manuel and a 5$ test lite. The switch asm. reverses power and ground to make the window motor run in opposite directions. Test at the switch or at the motor connection. Also,if the other windows are acting up,you may have broken wires in the harness that runs thru the drivers door.Pull the door panel, disconnect the wires from the window motor and put your test lite in the door harness connector. If it doesn't show power/ground in each direction you have a switch/wiring problem. If you have power/ground,you probably have a bead window motor.Hope this helps

hey thanks for the adivce. I'll check all that out. Can I get a test light anywhere. I think I have one somewhere, but not sure where. The other window is not acting up at all. Never had a problem with it. It's just both of the mirrors and my driver's side window. thanks again!

A couple months ago my drivers side window just stopped working. I checked all the harnesses and everything seemed ok, so I put everything back together. Then after 2 days of it not doing anything it just magically started working fine and I haven't had a problem with it since. It's still got me scratching my head...

I appreicate all the help! I swear, I think grand prix's have a mind of their own. One day everything works, the next it doesn't, then POOF it works fine again. Strange.

i had a similar problem with my 89 grand prix..sometimes it worked sometimes not..(driver's window)..in the end..it stopped working up at all..the window regulator was at fault..(electrical motor)..i got that from the scrap..10 $ :) and installed it myself..

In my case instead of the regulator at fault was the switch. It would go up and down when it felt like it. Try some contact cleaner on the swtiches. It would take care of it for a while...

To be more specific. The problem that I had was inermitently the front/right door would come down but not up. I checked the wiring and everything looked normal. I replaced the actuator since it was once all covered with mud(My car drowned once). The problem persisted, I replaced the switch and everything is working normal.
So first of all make sure that all contacts inside the connector are ok. Then use contact cleaner to clean switch contact surfaces. Then use the same contact cleaner to clean actuator and lubricate using wd40. If it was a bad connection or dirt on the actuator this will take care of that.
IF it does not get fixed by this then check what Bronco2 posted since what the switch do is invert polarity to move window up/down. IF when checking the terminals pushing the switch to either side will get you ~+12v and swing all the way to ~-12V then the problem is the actuator.
