getting ready for d16y8 swap

yep, i'm getting ready to get this thing done. but i have a question first. how should i activate v-tec? I will later get a VAFC (just need to save up more money), but i need to just have the engine run. Should i use a RPM Tach? or w/e it's called? Suggestions would be helpful please. oh, and this engine is going into my 90 CRX DX, n' the engine was in a 91 CRX Si, so it's ready to just drop into my rex. just gotta get MPFI to be installed. I'm also going to be using the pm6(CRX Si ECU if i remember correctly) ECU.
