few starting questions firebird 79..?

When I start my bird (when its cold) it chokes and than stabilizes after 2-4 min. Than however, my engine runs faster and I have to give it gas to put it in normal runing condition. i was wondering why is this happening.

When its not cold, it usually starts out fast, but than I give it gas to slow it down.
By fast I mean kind of like louder and as if somebody is giving it gas.

I heard about hot starts but I was not sure if this is it.

Sounds like idle problems...

Without more info, and a more precise description of the problem, I can tell you that carb equiped autos have an automatic choke. Part of this mechanism is a fast-idle cam. When you start the auto cold, you need to press the throttle about half way down one time before cranking to set the choke. At the same time, the fast idle cam sets to make the engine run faster so it won't stall while warming up. The Pontiac 400/four barrel in the '79 TransAm will run at about 1800 rpm after it warms up. To slow it down, you tap the throttle to release the fast idle cam. Then the throttle will go back to the normal idle stop and the engine will slow down. When hot, the engine does not choke and does not move the fast idle cam. By hot I mean running within about the last two hours on a warm day, or about twenty minutes when below freezing.
