i know the feeling dude. i'm driving a mk3 with NO modifications, here in Alberta canada, and i'm paying 4300 for liability and collision. assuming you are a younger driver, as am i, there's no getting around it. ya just gotta pay the price, keep a clean record for a few years, and hope thigs get better.

I know this isn't too helpful :P , but just thought i'd let you know you're not alone.

We all know the insurance companies are screwing us.
Kick up a fuss and fight your government for a public insurance system. there are advantages and disadvantages, but will result in lower, more stable insurance for everyone.

Advice I have:
If you get in a (minor) accident, never admit fault unless a cop says it is your fault, even then, cops aren't always right. A cop tried to charge me but I researched my stuff and argued with him until he dropped the charge. It is better to work out repair payments with the other party. My insurance doubled to $2000/year under my parents insurance after a $800 accident!

Don't let your insurance company know about the mods, however, if the mods get stolen, then they wont be insured. But the amount you'll save in insurance will pay for new mods.

Gosh, the insurance for such an old car is so much expensive. I'm over 30 and am paying around 181 CAD(year) for my 1994 Gold GL in Quebec Canada. I have been maintaining a clean record for 6yrs. In addition, I have no ticket for 5 yrs straight. Hope this would at least give you a piece of hope that the insurance will eventually go down.

I live in Melbourne, Australia and I recently bought my first VW Golf, a pristine 2001 Silver GL 1.6 manual with 34,000 KMS. I am 31, with excellent driving record and have to pay AUD 812 for comprehensive insurance which is about USD 550 or GBP 315, which is pretty expensive when a GM, Ford or Toyota of the same price range (ie, Corolla, Focus/Laser or Astra) was going to be about AUD 550-600. I guess AUD 800 is cheap compared to some other countries (esp UK!), but considering the cars price AUD 21,000 and it is bog stock (except for factory sunroof) it's a bit pricey.
