I was wondering if anyone knew the % of loss from the flywheel to the wheels, for a Y1 non-lsd, jdm 1st gen b16a ?


And what power does a stock 1g b16a w/ Y1 get at the wheels ?
or any stock b16a for that matter.

as i am trying to figure out what may have been done to the motor by the previous donor car.

basically, i got a swap done to my '88 civic. as far as i know, it was 'practically' overhauled. & is using the stock honda ecu for the motor.

i got it dynoed with intake, stock headers/cat, w/ a 2" cat-back exhaust : 93kw on a dyno dynamics.

They told me, on "their" dyno, stock one gets around 75-80kw. surely intake and 2" cat-back exhaust cannot be extra 13-18kw ? that is the gain i expect from a forced induction motor. not n/a.

they say maybe some headwork, or raised compression may have been done, maybe. but i thought i'd ask for opinions too.

Why dont you do that that person is doing in your avatar and dyno it? Its the only way you'll get those numbers (and they'll be exact instead of someones possible guess) for your specific set-up.

I can do this, but not as a %age ;)

My SiR is rated @ 118KW and it puts down 82.3KW @ the front wheels. That's a stock engine with PS and alternator belts sucking a bit of power. I gained 3KW by adding a new catalytic convertor as previously I'd got 79.8KW.

B16A and Y1 tranny dyno'd in 4th gear.

It works to be about 35% loss I think.

BTW - we had a drag 3rd gen running a stock B16A with exhaust, CAI and not much else running after it - it got 90KW, so I'm fairly close with loss figures on mine.

I heard 15 to 22% loss in the b series transmissions

I have a intake/exaust/ignition on my B16 and it rated 146Whp using 35% that would mean 198hp... however 15% puts it at 170 and 22 @ 180 slightly more acurate #.

don't get me wrong I could have a freak motor putting out 200hp however I doubt it.

actually Kunundrum, 146hp(108kw) at the wheels with a loss of :
15% = 171hp(127kw) @flywheel
22% = 187hp(139kw) @flywheel
31.5% = 210hp(157kw) @ flywheel
35% = 224hp(167kw) @flywheel

Setanta, i averaged your ones, which would put it too 108hp(81kw) @ wheels.

From a stock 118kw @fly, the loss is around 30-33%. Which is 'around' what i have also calc'd from a bit of reading & doing the math of other civic platforms with stock b16a. (Of course, give or take a few kw difference between the different dyno's, different variables etc etc)

Kunundrum, i am the same, in thinking about freak motor with close to 200hp.

My last run on the same dyno was 131whp(98kw), which consisted of intake & full exhaust. When i asked the bloke from CRD (aka CAS), as to what % they calculate drivetrain loss, he simply said, "Put it this way, you are making power in the same region as some Integra Type-R's that we have dynoed."

So when you calculate 30-33% drivetrain loss (inc PS, belts etc), and keep in mind that i have a practically identical, 1st gen b16a with Y1 tranny like Setanta. At the fly, it's running roughly 187-195hp(140-146kw).

It makes you think, as to whether 29-37hp(22-28kw) is really attainable only by the intake & exhaust mods....
