SL500:

Despite the better performance of the bm i cant quite forgive it its looks, though i've yet to see it in the flesh... SL500

i like the SL's looks better...
but i'd assume you can get the BMW in a stick.
so i'd take that, and hope that there's a nice Hamann or Hartge kit out there for it, and big wheels...
if it stays stock, i'll take the merc.
(but maybe in an AMG flavor...)

Good point, i hadnt really considered the manual/auto issue.
I prefer manual (by far) but if i was looking for a sports car to hustle around i wouldnt go for either of these, so ill stick with the SL500 in auto form.
ps. save the SL55 for the M6 ;)

good stuff.
either car would be a top-down fun car, not a serious sports car...
if it came to the sl55 amg and the m6, i'd take the m, b/c of the stick...
but for these two, i'm still sl for the looks...

amen to that... plus i have more faith in BMW's M division than Merc's AMG, so that comparo's an easy choice for me...
the 645 vs sl500 is a little trickier though :) , let's see how people vote

I'm going with the SL500. Better looks in my opinion, with the only downside being the automatic transmission. I can't wait to see a new 6-series up close.

Same... hopefully it looks better in the flesh, else BMW will have another 8-series on their hands...

645Ci the stick option is too compelling
and I quite like the styling of the 645Ci, much like I think the 7 series looks top-notch.
and I think Mercs, for what you get are a little too overpriced, when compared to thier BMW/Audi equivalents.

I'll definitely agree with you on Mercs being overpriced.
As for BMW's recent stylings, I dont think they're as bad as most people think - I think the 7 looks great riding on big alloys - but there are just a few things, that if changed, would make the cars look a lot better... no surprise that the 7 is getting a makeover.. im sure the 6 will, too.. unfortunately both the 3-coupe and X5 looked better pre-facelift (imho) so i dont have much faith in where bmw is going...

I'm not sure, but I think the SL350 is available with a manual box. I love the new 6. not quite as good looking as the origional, but its a damn fine car. Engineering is its stong point.
I think i'd still go for the Benz though. The hard top is safer,
and more secue, and the looks are to die for.
Off the rec, I think the Z8 is more of an SL competitor. The 6 is really up against the CLK. 4 seats, fabric roof etc.
Ps. The M6 will feature a V10, and an auto box, and the manual can't handle the power. Sorry.
