I just put the head back on my engine and have a question about putting the timing belt back on. I know how to make sure that the cam is in the correct position but how do I make sure that the crankshaft is where it should be? I want to get as much done today as I can so please help me asap!

on the crankshaft pulley there will be four marks.
|.|.|.............|
like this. the one mark by itself is TDC. line it up with the little sight on the timing cover, which is located to the rear of the engine mount.

Did you mark the cam gear & timing belt before you took the belt off? If I'm not mistaken, you're supposed to set the cam gear at TDC before removing the head. Most people mark the belt & gear with White Out, or chalk so you know exactly where the belt was on the gear when you took it off...

If you look at the timing belt gear on the crank, it has a little notch that you need to line up with the little timing mark.

If I line it up with that 4th mark (the white one) then the little notch in the gear should be lined up too right?

I'm in the process of doing my head too man. I'm waitin for it to get pressure checked at the machine shop. Did you take the whole timing belt off? Or just the part for the cam gear? Cause I set both to the TDC marks. I tied some of those twist tie thingys on the gear so it wouldn't move and took a lot of pictures. Makesure that everything is set just the same as when you took it off. You shouldn't have to move anything.

Lol, this is my first head I'm doing. I read up on a lot of stuff and talk to some experienced people. So it's basically like a try n miss for me. But I'm sure I'm heading the right way. My next mission is putting on this OBX intake manifold and jdm zc fuel injectors I have coming from ebay.

I already bought my head gasket and torque wrench today, because Friday I will be replacing it.
So you guys are saying that yuo will have to mark where the TDC is b4 u take the head off?
Also, Im just takin part of the timing belt off, jus enough to get the head off the block thats fine right?
Thanks

you can do it one of two ways really..
1. turn the crank to TDC by the TDC mark on the crank pulley. when you put the head back on, set the head at TDC, replace the timing belt.
2. leave the crank where it is at, leave the head where it is at. Using whiteout, or anti sabotage paste, or something similar, mark a tooth on the cam sprocket and mark the corresponding rib on the timing belt. remove the head (do not turn cam) & hold tension on the timing belt so that it doesnt slip out of the lower pulley grooves, then replace the head, line up the marks you made and have at it.

There should already be a TDC mark on the on crank pulley. You need to turn the crank counter-clockwise and watch the pulley for the TDC mark. Commonly they'll be a white dash. Once you have that lined up with the pointer for the crank pulley, check the camgear to makesure the two lines are lined up level with the head and that the TDC line is lined up with the pointer on the timing belt cover. Check the rotor lineup too. The one part of the rotor will have a whole, find the #1 bolt whole and check if their lined up. Let me know if you need anymore info.
