91 Accord Transmission Problems

Hey,

So I have to admit that I am not a huge car buff...but I have dated a few. I have a 91 Accord EX coupe. Among many problems that are starting to go wrong with it, this morning it wouldn't let me put it in gear(it is an automatic). I can turn the car on and push the shift release button in, but the shifter thing(sorry for my lack of terms) won't move. There is a "key shift release" that will allow me to move it while the car is not on...I am pretty sure it is so that you can put the car in a gear when it won't start...but no luck when the car is on.

If anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it. If I can help by anwsering more questions then please let me know.

push it in and try really hard.. if ur on a hill sometimes mine used to get stuck.. it was hard to get out

i had that same problem years ago on my 92. let me check with my mechanic on what we did and ill try to get the solution on here asap

This same things happened to my wife/s 92 a few months ago. It wouldn't shift out of park unless it wasn't running. We drove it by shifting into drive or reverse (using the shift lock mechanism) and then starting it up. We only did this once or twice though until I figured out what was wrong.

None of the rear brakes were lighting up. It seems that it is a safety measure to make the shifter lock when the computer senses that the brake lights are not functioning correctly Look in your manual, it will have a little blurb about how to use the shift lock mechanism.

Turns out that the brake light switch went bad. I called around, it would have cost $150 to fix it at a shop and a dealer. I bought the switch at an auto parts store for about $25. It took 10 minutes to switch out the old one and put in the new one (The switch is right above the brake pedal). Car shifts like a charm now.

try this too. this happend to me. since the shifter is made to shift by the brake, its controlled by a brake cylinder silinoid i think...i doubt its the right term but tacoaccord has the right idea.

i thought that was the problem on mine but actually it wasnt. my idle was a tad to high for it to shift, if i pulled back on the throttle the cars idle drops which means that is too high. so for that time i just reved and let it dropp or pull back on the gas.

but tacoaccord is right...

My 91 Accord SE had a blown fuse. Or like taco said, the sloplamp switch is bad.
