I have 1997 VW Golf that will not start. Starter does not turn over, nor does the starter solenoid click when the ignition key is in start position. I have checked the fuses and there are no blown fuses. I tried to locate the start relay but failed to locate it.
Please advise what should I do next and where would I find the start relay??

Automatic or manual? Is the alarm system working properly? Check to see if your getting power to the small red/black "trigger" wire on the starter when in start position.

How can I bypass the alarm since most of the time it will mess up my day by not starting at all. Is there a better way of taking this alarm off? I used to take off the battery to have the car starts, but it will not do it lately. I do not have extra money to bring it to the mechanic to take off the alarm completely so not to interfere anymore with the starting.
I will appreciate if you can help me with this problem.
Thank you.

You can disable the alarm by unplugging the module under the dash. It has a 6 pin and 10 pin connector. To keep your starter working you will have to connect pin #5 & #6 of the 6 pin connector together.

I am having the same problem. I drive a '97 5 speed golf. One day I drove home from work without any problem, (except the coolant light was on), I parked, turned her off, added coolant and 3 hours later was unable to start her again. She cranks like she wants to start but can't. Timing belt is fine, ignition coil is all good. I can't rule out fuel pump, but she wouldn't even turn over when I sprayed some starter fuel into the intake valve. There's a good spark on the distributer cap and all the fuses work. Please, does anyone have any ideas? I'm too poor to buy a new car and can't afford a mechanic right now (I'm already replacing the transmission in my Nissan Quest).
I was having trouble with her stalling frequently recently...O2 sensor needs to be replace. You think these are related?
