Radio volume problem

In a 93 Crown Vic, has anybody had a problem with the radio volume going away after the radio is on for a few minutes? It does this with the tape & radio. You can turn it all the way up but it is still low and distorted.

Sounds like the final audio output transistors are defective, and are overheating very quickly. You could have the radio repaired, but it'd probably be better to simply replace it with a new one - especially if you'd like to add a CD/MP3 player to the car.

Since a short in the speaker wiring may have caused the problem, it'd be a good idea to check that as well, to avoid damaging the new radio.
