Muddy Trans Filter

Kept Loosing my prime on my tranny in my 2001 stratus in gear wouldn't go anywhere and then suddnely it would. Took it to the shop they did a tranny flush and it lasted about 200 miles. Towed it back to the dealer and this time he said it looks like there was mud in my filter. Or it looked muddy. But no metal filingis. Any suggestions?

Sounds like water might be getting into the transmission. Did you get the vehicle used or drive it through deep water/flood?

make sure the dipstick was fully seated so no water go in.

I also flushed the trans and it worked fine for almost exactly 200miles also. the car has 29K on the clock.

next time you all go to the shop who serviced your transmission, find out what type of fluid they put in your car, if they used anything other than MOPAR ATF +4, they could've screwed up your transmission.

nope, I did it, and I used atf4.

Ended up having 2 trannys put in this car, the first one failed miserably after less than 300 miles, I say it was the installer at the dealership and the fact that they put a cheap used one in it leaked fluid shortly after arrival in my yard. Finally after the third attemp they bought a new/rebuilt one and installed it. Haven't had a lick of trouble since then. Well my heater switch only works on position 4 now and I live in this frozen tundra called Maine. Good Day All.

One more thing you may want to consider. Where the transmission fuild cools is in the radiator, you might have a crack that's allowing coolant to leak into the transmission fluid. Have you been running low on coolant or has the car been running a bit hot?

no, It has not been low on coolant, and not running warm. I am at a loss here.

if I sound like a retard, I apologize, what color is your fluid? Since you have an '01, your car is using the orange-colored coolant, that would make your coolant look black, like it's burnt, but still muddy. I agree w/ BigDan58, I believe your trans cooler is cracked, you'll also see a bit of discoloration in your coolant bottle.

nope, fluid looks perfect. and I have not lost any coolant.

well, WORST case scenario, your clutch packs started to wear prematurely. Have you had any unusual shifting/sounds coming from the tranny since the muddy filter thing started?

none, and it hold just fine when it has line pressure. there is no slipping at all when it has pressure. I am taking it to a shop today to have them evacuate and refill the fluids. hopefully there is just an unstable substance in it.
