2001Grd am temp gauge,check engine ,fans on

My 2001 Grand Am the temp guage goes to zero, then the check engine light comes on, then the temp fans come on. Replace temp sending unit worked for 3 weeks then it started all over again. The temp guage goes up then back to zero when started but does not read. why???????
