I've got a loud whine from my 97 (5.7L) but it's fairly constant, not any different on starting from what I've noticed. I've read a few other posts about loud fuel pumps and most of them seem to indicate that if you're gas mileage and power are okay then it's just a loud. pump. I've also seen quite a few posts about people replacing them so I'm just waiting for mine to go out. I can't imagine a normally working fuel pump that makes that much noise but I haven't killed it yet.

I have a 96 Surburban. I have read many other forums and it seems that the fuel pumps are just load. I also have a few friends that have the same thing going on. I consulted a mechanic and he stated the same thing about them being noisy. So I am just going to keep driving it and keep changing the fuel filter every 10,000 miles.

My fuel pump was making the same noise and my GMPP was about to expire so I took it to my dealer and insisted that they replace the fuel pump under warranty. The new fuel pump is very quiet.

I have had the same whine for months.
I am at the store today and POOF the truck quits.
Towing from grocery store = $57.00
New fuel pump = $275.00
Spending your Easter sunday on your back R & R the gas tank =PRICELESS!!!

What genious put the pump there????

I have the same thing with my 99. From the posts I read I have determined to just ignore. I have no problems.

I have just bought a 99 suburban and have a loud whine from the pump also. I haven't tried to fix it yet. My gas mileage is low though. 8-10mpg. have some work to do. i'll probably try a new filter first, some plugs, and wires. I will let you all know.

Suburbans are not the only vehicles with loud whine from the gas tank caused by the fuel pumps. most Chevrolet minivans do the same thing, as well as the 92-95 Caprice and 98-2000 Luminas. It is somewhat normal. I notice mine is louder when at higher elevations or towing my boat up mountain passes. By the way, that burst of whine you hear when you turn the key to the on position is the pump priming the fuel line for the start.

:lol2: I went ahead and changed the fuel filter and noticed a definite improvement in noise. It was surely lessened. It is not very noticeable now and I found a fram filter at walmart that was just a :2cents: few dollars. Good luck to anyone else trying to quiet it. :banghead: I have no complaints now of the noise.
