hi, i own a 93 z28 with an auto trans. Recently my gearbox died at on me and at the same time my water pump died too. I got a new gearbox put in and new water pump but since i got the car back from the shop its driving abnormally and lost a lot of power. First of all, when i launch the car from still to full throttle the rpm only goes up to 4500revs and thats only coz the wheels are spinning. it then immediately loses all momentum and rpm gets stuck at around 2-3000. Whenever i'm driving on the highway no matter what i do I cannot get the rpm to budge past 3000 which is causing the car to accelerate much much slower than it used to, not to mention the scream of the engine that is now gone.
I took it back to the gearbox place and he said it wasn't a gear problem. We had the car computer checked and a code 28 kept coming up. The mechanic said it could be a problem with either ignition(ie needs new plugs) , gears or it may need a whole new computer. Another mechanic said it might be the that the gears need recalibrating or something. I never had this problem before getting the new gearbox and i'm desperate for any answer as to what it may be. Thanks.

Its the gear box...I think. I mean thats the only thing that would make sense. If it wont go over 3,000 RPMs ....It sounds like the gears. If you get an electric water pump that will add more HP. I'm in Auto at school, and it sounds like the gear box.I'm pretty sure if it's the water pump thats the problem it wouldnt have that effect on the car. But I'm no expert, and I'm just giving my imput. I'll try to rember to check out the code tomorrow at school for ya.

gearbox??? is that the transmission???? if so, then yes, i would say that it is the trans, and the place that did the work dosnt want to fess up to it. get it in writing that if they are sure there isnt a problem, that they tested it and found nothing. was there a warrante on the work? if so, take it to another place for a check. if that place finds the problem go back and have the original place either fix it, or pay to have it fixed. i agree with cannibalrights that its not the waterpump, if it were, it would be due to drag on the pully, from inside the pump, and it is highly unlikely that it would actually slow the engine, it would more likely stop the pully and the belt would be pulled over it rather than turning it, and you would definately smell this if it were happening, and your belt would probly have snapped by now. but if the pully is turning freely, than its the gearbox. barring somethinge else that may ahve broke at the same time those two items were replaced. i dont have a code 28 in my book so im not sure what that means. but from what youve said, i would say its the trans, something wrong with it.

Well i just took the car back to that incompetent bastard that did my gearbox. I took it to two seperate gearbox specialists and they both told me that the problem was with the gears and that the guy had installed very weak gears that were not suited to the camaro, let alone the fact that he overcharged me about $200 for it. So i took it back tonite and he claims that he'll put in a whole other gear box and see how it goes. I just hope the car is back to normal. Thanks for the advice and replies guy, i appreciate it. Damn i love this site almost as much as i love my camaro

you would not believe what sh*t this has been for me. I went back to check on my camaro today and guess what??? the idiot had left my car parked outside last night and someone stole one of my rims. SO now my car is sitting there leaning one side on bricks and still has that same shitty gear box he put in in the first place. BUT alas he is going to pay for a brand new rim and tyre and he's agreed to put in a whole new gearbox. Serves the idiot right for not doing it right the first time :evillol:
