3rd gen drifting

in a 5 speed manula transmission 3rd gen eclipse, ive been told drifting is impossible! i find this information to be compeltely false. I have initiated a small drift numerous of times, but i cant quite get it to get all the way sideways without spinning. IF anyone can handle this, please tell me how the hell you got it sideways. ive tapped the e brake to initiate it, but once i release it it swings back forward. if i pull the e brake too hard for too long it spins all the way around.

The stock suspension is too soft for a delibrate drift. You want to drift you would need to get very strong rear springs (2000lb/in) and low front end springs (200lb/in), and bald tires in the rear, the car could drift very easily. But the car would not be streetable. Oh, and a rear sway bar that is ultra stiff.

You want to drift? Go on ebay and find an old 180SX, 240SX, RX-7, or some other old car that you won't give 2 shits about when you crash it.

I've done it to... Its very possible using the e-brake to get it into a mild drift. But like johnny said, you have to get harder suspensions and probably some added horse power since the eclipse is a front wheel drive. I have lowered eibach springs and a rear sway bar and i can get into a mild drift on command. You can control your drift using the throttle and steering.

i can drift good as shit in all seriousness. but ive always done it in my boys 95 lti z28 camaro with a 383 stroker , all the bolt ons , headers, cams and exhaust. its so easy. Im honestly theo nly kid around here who can do it right, when im in a rwd vehicle. ive tought many people how to drift. i just cant seem to get it to work the way i want it to in my OWN CAR. now i have flat spots in the rear and NO TREAD in the front. Do you think silicone based tires like som yokohamas may help?

Yeah, it's harder on the eclipse even with good tires. I used to get in accidental drifts when i had an 88 toyota... The eclipse wasn't really made for that stuff, it was more of a "comfort" car rather then serious handling. Get a 4wd or a rwd and it's going to be much easier.

Ok its FF dont drift it. Wasdt of time. The drive train is not ment to be drifted. GO buy a different car.

You have to have RWD to drift (or AWD with skill). A lot of people think that cutting the wheel and pulling the ebrake is a drift. No. Thats a powerslide. A drift a controlled slide, with controlled throttle around a complete turn. In most cases of drifting, the car is sideways before the turn even begins.

Anyone who has ever said that they drifted around a turn in their 3G is wrong.

Well, it is possible to drift using a FWD. It's been done many times. Have you heard of the drift king? Keiichi something from Japan, the guy who used to drive the NSX and the Toyota GT1 in the Japan GT races. I've seen a video of him doing it in a Sentra. Ton of other people have proven it's do able. I'm not saying it's easy, but it's doable.

Ive never seen and FWD drift, but have heard people speak of it like you have. I never heard of that video. I have to see that one.

i have seen a video of a FWD civic drifting in Japan. But that driver was doing so much work to get the car to slide that it really wasn't worth it.

There is a big difference between drifting and sliding through a turn though. It seems that any FWD car would be sliding, so technically, its not really a drift, but who can really tell the difference anyway.

I'm not sure how much of a drift it counts as, but I've gotten the back end to slide out on command. The tires have a lot of miles on them (about 3/4 through their life) and if I keep accelerating hard enough in the turns, say, 2-3rd gear, high rpm's, the tail likes to kick it out. But i have to be balanced in the turn already (If I go into a turn too fast and then cut the wheel, I just plow foward - If i do 2/3 of a 120 degree turn at constant speed and let the chassis settle down, then i slowly give to more gas till the lack of weight on the back tires causes them to lose grip).

One time (being an ass and showing off) I was sitting at this stop light, with a dodge durango in front of me. My friend in the car (I was tryin to show off some moves in my car to him) yelled out the window to do a burnout (to the durango - he knew the kid). The durango drove to the middle of the intersection, stopped, and did a brake stand. After a little bit of smoke, he fishtailed and drove off to the left. I was goin crazy, thinkin how cool that was, so I dropped the clutch at 4K rpms, and started the tires spinning. I also wanted to go left, but everyone who's done a burnout in a FWD car knows you can't turn if the front tires are spinning. Well, I held it till I realized I wasn't going to make the turn -> I was instead heading straight for a boulder on the right of the road (that was to the left). I eased up on the gas so that the tires caught grip, and when they did, the nose shot to the left (the wheels were turned left and I still was about 1/3 throttle) and the tail shot to the right. I quickly turned back to the right to correct the slide, and held the slide while riding red line in 1st (and barely missing the boulder). The car corrected itself shortly before I shifted to 2nd. I guess that *sorta* counts for a cool slide.

Kinda, More like lucky you didnt kill your car. There is a thin line between cool and out of control, and from the sounds of it you were out of control. The worst thing you could have done was to keep standing on it, everybody knows that once you let off the car will do what its supposed to do. At least you didnt smash the brake when the ass end moved out. :nutkick:

Anyone ever see the anime series Initial D? if your gunna get a car 2 drift in, get a toyota trueno, the 86, things made for driftin! lol n not just coz it's a cartoon or anything, i've seen the thing in the BMI DVD's, during drift contests, btw eclipseGTO, the guy in the video's i have seen - he is the drift king your talking bout, he practically started the drifting contests of today!
