Cant stop the smoke!

Hi,

Took my hatch out driving for the past 2 nights and the car smokes pretty bad when u rev past 3500 RPM's.
So as long as you drive normally and shift at the right rpm's there is no smoke.
However, when you race or rev it past about 4k smoke pours out.
Its white smoke BTW.
Anyways, someone suggested Smoke Away because his dad puts it in his 88' Benz.
So I changed my oil and added the Smoke Away like the directions said.
I put about 60 miles on it with no results.
So last night while driving wit my friend we stopped into Wal-Mart and I bought a bottle of "Slick 50 Engine Treatment For High Milaege Engines"
We added the bottle and put about 20 miles on it with my friend driving behind me and he said it didnt smoke as much.
But my question is, how long do you have to wait to see results with this stuff? I know it wont remove all the smoke, but it should help to clear a big portion up.
Thanks

i have no idea how long it should take before it starts to work but by the sounds of it, ur head gasket is shot, replace it and it should get ridda the smoke

Ok I was also told by some people its the head gasket.
I wanna save the money and do it myself, but just how hard is it to do?
Is it something I could get done in a weekend?
How much is the head gasket?
Do i just follow my repair manual on how to do it?
Any other gaskets to replace when I do this?
Thanks

Its really not too hard to do if your somewhat mechanically inclined. The hardest part id say is getting all the old head gasket off so you have a nice clean surface to put the new one on. Using a Haynes or Chiltons will defnitly help with the process. It wouldnt be a bad idea to get a gasket set. Find one that includes all the gaskets from the head up, their only like $70 on ebay. Still though, your not really even sure if its the headgasket so dont just go throwing parts at it. Are you losing coolant? Is your oil kinda milky looking? What about the underside of the oil cap? Is it kinda whiteish? If you have any or all of those symptoms then you should start really focusing on the headgasket. Good luck.

yup, somehow coolant is getting inside the combustion chamber and getting burned explaining the white smoke that is coming out your exhaust. This points to a blown or bad headgasket. Yes a headgasket can be done in a day. Sorry your oil additives will not help with getting rid of the smoke.

not only is it possible the headgasket is bad or blown but dont forget there is a possibility of a bad intake mani gasket also. though it doesnt sound so bad being it pours smoke out at over 3500rpm or so. as far as the work is concerned IMO the hardest part is getting that 12mm nut off of the bottom of the intake manifold, it always gets to me.

im thinking it might be your rings. do you have oil resadue on your back bumper. i only say this because you say it happens at around 3500 rpm.
if it is your head gasket its a easy job took me 2 1/2 hours most of the time was to get the old one off and clean up the carbon biuld up.

bad rings cause black smoke.

bad rings cause black smoke.

not true. my 89 crx had a d16a6 and the rings were bad i was blowing out a blue white smoke. anyways just do a pressuse test on you cooling system.

Nope no oil residue on the back bumper.
I wanna replace the head gasket soon, possibly this weekend.
I got a D16A6 engine out of a 90 CRX SI and I am practicing taking it apart and looking at the head gasket and rings.
So when I do it to my hatch i shouldnt hopefully mess it up.
How much do head gaskets cost at Autozone?

I'd be willin to bet that it is your head gasket. Mine was like that for the longest time. And then it finally gave up. Check your over-fill radiator tank, it's a white little tank that usually has anti-freeze in it unless it's oil like mine. Take it out and see if it is dirty. Also check to see if it lowers ever.

Yea, im almost 100% sure its the head gasket because I checked the overflow coolant tank and it has oil in it.
I did the SI engine and took the head off in about an hour, not bad for the first time.
So what you do is take the old gasket out and scrap the stuff out so its smooth, right?
Can I use a sharp razor, like for removing window tint to smooth it out?
DO I have to use a sealant for the gasket?
Thanks

I checked the coolant resevoir one more time and it was completly covered in oil around all teh sides and floating around in the green coolant. So it definetly should be the headgasket right?
Thanks

yep that would be ur headgasket gone

and dont use any gasket sealer either, you dont need it, when you torque the head bolts, it will squish the gasket making it seal

yeah... seriously. this is getting old. I propose that if a newb brings up a thread more than 6 months old, especially if it's to hijack it and ask a question, they should be shot... or at least booted.. or SOMETHING... gimme a break.

This is what I would do. SInce your on a budjet just get a hjead gasket. DOn't worry about the other gaskets. Take the head and intake manifold off as one piece (dont have to buy an intake gasket). It sounds like you have never done this so, when you get the head off clean the head surface and the block surface. Be sure not to gouge the head or block because they are both aluminum and it cuts like butter. Before putting the head back on be sure you chase the threads in the block. Your also going to want to clean the head bolts. You can either chase them, or use a wire brush on a grinder wheel. Now put the head back on and torque the head to spec. If you happen to strip out a thread in the block dont fret because you can drill out the old thread and use what they call helicoils.
