I was driving along the highway this evening and I decided to go all out. I have a 2000 Civic SI Canadian (EX American). I was in 5th gear doing about 185km/h and revving at about 5000 rpm. All of a sudden it sounded and felt as if the car just died. Is there a limiter on the engine that prevents it from doing a certain speed??? Also, will my vtec kick in when I am in 5th gear and doing more then 5500 rpm???

yes there is probably a limiter and yes the vtec will kick in at the same spot in all gears

Dude - most Japanese cars have a speed limiter programmed into the ECU. It's about 180 - 185 km/h, I'm not surprised your car died. The ECU cut the fuel supply!

yeah you just hit the limiter on it and cut the fuel supply..Mine has done that to me.. You just let off the gas pedal and let eh speed come down a little then reapply gas and it's fine..

It's just a wierd surprise when you aren't expecting it...:frog:

I've never had any sort of fuel cutoff when I've tried topping out my car. I've gotten it up to 127 MPH - which is 6900 RPM in 4th gear. You should hear VTEC scream at that speed.

all cars have speed limiters...don't matter what side of the earth the came from.

I've never hit my limiter....Oh wait...I had my limiter removed...I was in 5th gear doing around 6700 rpms and the stupid civic speedometer ran outta room for me to know how fast I was going...this was done with a GSR motor in a civic

You have a USDM Civic EX, you're not gonna notice VTEC, it's only a SOHC.....and I believe on the SOHC VTEC it kicks in @ 4400

Another thing, you guys with SOHC VTEC engines gotta stop saying ho wloud VTEC is.... you cant hear it, it makes almost NO audible difference. Your engine is just screaming because it's working so hard...

As fas as top speed is concerned, 124 or so is the most you can do with a D16... remember, stock speedos are NOT accurate once you get to around 100+ mph......

some japanese cars have a speed limiter at 180km/h... i know that with honda, subaru and mitsubshi, they all have it but with mazda and nissan....i have no idea
ive never hit my speed limiter (i dont have a need for speed). what actually happens to the engine? does it shut down?

oh i just remembered....i have hit the speed limiter...never mind my question!!

First of all, RevHappy is right. Vtec does kick in at 5400 RPM. Secondly, with the SOHC vtec engine, you can hear very noticeably the vtec kicking in. I guess you've never heard one before. I hear one everyday whipping punks like you down the road!!! So before you open your mouth and talk s**t, get the facts straight. And I also don't remember saying anything about how LOUD my vtec is. Sound is nothing its speed that counts. :finger:!!!

I got my car up to 110 on a flat, with my foot buried. the car wasn't goin any faster, then i hit a slight downhill and I got up to 125, then, the car really wasn't goin any faster. And it felt aright. That was when the car weas still pretty new. Now, if I go 90-100, the car feels like it's falling apart.

I just got my Si, had it up to 136 and still had more to go. Drove perfectly fine at that speed. Mods: AEM CAI, Skunk2 Coils. I decided to slow down, luckily... half mile down the road, cop had a speed trap. Lucky ass me :)

Yeah, considering my friend has one, and with his SAFC it shows the VTEC spike @ 4X00 or something....:flipa:

I know 5500 is when the newer DOHC VTEC engines crossover, and just goping by personal experience on the SOHC VTEC crossover....

What a joke. I've driven the Civic Ex a FEW times here, and I NEVER heard VTEC kick in, and I kicked the SHIT out of the car. It's only 127hp in a 2600lb car. It's not a race car, it's a 16+ second grocery getter. I highly doubt your "whipping" punks like me with a SOHC VTEC in a coupe...

Punk? I think not, I just don't believe half the shit on the boards because 99% of the people are so full of shit it's not even funny. Just because I question you, doesn't mean you gotta get your panties in a bundle, just prove me wrong.

When VTEC kicks in, do you hear the engine "switch" over and get louder? Or is it a gradual change in pitch? I heard neither when I drove the USDM Civic EX (the SAME as your Si)....

"Sound is nothing, it's speed that counts"

Please don't tell me you race your car....:finger:

136? You do know that they are innacurate at those speeds right?

Funny.... the top speed of a 99-00 Civic Si IS 136.... so you were running ~8000 or so? Thought you said you had more to go? Sorry an AEM CAI isn't gonna help you THAT much on top speed....

Actually, I do hear the engine "switch" over to vtec. And also, I have beaten a few DOHC's in my time and CRX's like yours :flipa: . So before you start talking MORE SHIT about "127HP and grocery getting car", I never mentioned my car was stock :sun:. That just goes to show you how much of a punk you really are. :finger:

Punk huh? First off, A CRX Si with a whopping 108hp would spank your car. Secondly, I highly doubt you've put a hurting on many DOHC Hondas in your car, unless they were shitty drivers.

And trust me, I doubt you've beaten many CRX's like mine.... chances are you haven't raced many.

So for the record I wasn't talking SHIT, just laying down the facts that yes, your car has 127 HP stock. And unless you are blown, or on the bottle or with a swap, no amount of little measly bolt-ons is gonna put you any better than 15s.

But you:

A) OBVIOUSLY don't have a swap, so you're still on a SOHC VTEC engine
B) Fail to eralize that all the measly little bolt ons in the world arent gonna get that car faster than 15s..

I/H/E? Wow  So you've got...138hp or so? Jeez..... in a 2600lb car that might break into the 15s....

So there mister DOHC B series equipped Honda killer, what have you got done to your car? Or are you afraid that I might be right? :flipa: :finger:
