ok, i'm new 2 the accord forums, & i have alota questions. i already posted 2 questions, but i think all the rest of my noob questions should go here. ok, first off, my mom just got a 94 accord lx wagon, & i love this thing already. eventually, it may become my car (in like 2 years). i wanna know as much about this car as possible. ok, here go the questions: 1) on my ford escort wagon (93 lx) there is an air box & air silencer box (useless hunks of plastic that only restrict & quiet down the intake), is there 1 on my new car?(& if so, where is it & how do i make it go bye-bye?) 2) can any1 tell me if this has any negative affect on the car @ all, & if this will void the factory warranty (it's still got 25k miles left on it, this car was seriously babyed)? 3) can any1 out there suggest a good set of high performance tires (like in the realm of toyo proxes)? 4) will sum1 tell me how 2 get the "pimp" smiley 2 work, everytime i click on the smiley 2 insert it, it keeps just showing this ---> :pimp: my sig needs it badly!
thanks 4 any & all help, jordan

1) yes your accord has an air box under the hood. It can be removed rather easily by removing the hose clamp connecting the rubber tubing from the air box to the intake manifold. You would also have to remove each of the parts involved in the intake system (actual air box, filter, etc)

2) If you want it gone without letting all kinds of dirt and harmful deposits clogging up your engine, buy a cold air intake or a short ram (CAI is better IMO). This will increase hp, torque, and gas mileage (anything negative about that? :sunglasse ) I assume any aftermarket modifications to vital engine components voids warranty, but I'm not a lawyer, and I'm horrible at reading fine print so I would wait for someone else to give a definite answer

3) If you want a good set of tire, there are a number of good companies out there. I personally like my Falken Zeix. It depends on what purpose you want your tires to serve, there are tires for a variety of applications. Are you getting rims and tires or just tires? (out of curiosity)

4) pimp smiley never worked for me either. but I prefer :naughty: or :boink:

5) is your accord 5spd or automatic? I used to have 94 lx 5spd. It tore up the road!!! I miss her so :crying:

thanks 4 the tips, i might just have 2 look into cold air intake, any suggestions? it's an auto (i wanted a 5-speed, but it's my mom's car & she's dissabled so we had 2 go auto). i wanna get a set of tires for possibly some racing, but that has @ least sorta ok street ridability. once i get my license (dam wierd illinois laws), i can take it anywhere, she doesn't have 2 know i'll b racing. anyway, as far as negatives 2 the cold air intake, will anything in the engine wear out faster or anything like that? will it sound different? thanks a bunch, & check out my other noob question thread 2 if u can (i posted yesterday so u can prolly just scroll down the screen 2 find it). thanks 4 ur help, much appreciated, buut keep info coming (like anything i might wanna know about the car, stuff like that).

as for Intakes AEM and Injen are top of the line as of rite now. i personally like the AEM cold air intake w/ the 2.75" Bypass Valve. i would like to see a wagon rip it up on the track.

As F23A said, AEM and injen are reccommended. I have AEM and am very pleased. Your engine will wear out no faster after this mod. The sound of the engine at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) will be a million times better even without headers and exhaust. If you don't have money for AEM (about $125 for mine brand new on ebay then $45 for bypass valve) you could get a generic CAI which I have heard works just as well. You might not get quite as good a sound or perhaps exactly as much hp/tq gains, but if your on a budget, it is negligible.

Since you're not exactly pushing a powerhouse engine (neither am I, believe me  ) youll be pretty well of getting some Falkens for track duty to get some stick for your launches. Do a search for some of the threads on tire brands to get more info on what companies are better etc. I prefer Falkens for my current budget and driving style.

PS F23A, you said you like the AEM CAI with 2.75in bypass, I thought the 94 accord had 3in intake piping??? I could most definitely be wrong, I only had my 94 for about 7months and never got to mod it.

PPS: monkeyboy, youre from the ill state? I'm from Evanston. In Tallahassee, FL at school right now. Where are you from?

south burbs of chicago. idk if u know the area, but i live in park forest (next 2 olympia fields, chicago heights, matteson... basically @ 211th). thanks 4 the suggestions on the intakes, my parents may just let me put 1 on. 1st i gotta get a new engine in my escort (which is now mine, i'm not really allowed 2 drive the accord cause i don't have my license @ the moment), but once i get workin again that'll prolly b 1 of the 1st things 2 go on the car. i'm gonna take a look @ those intakes online now, how much is required 2 install? but thanks 4 all ur help, muuch appreciated

I believe it's 2.75" piping on the intake, but I could be wrong, I installed it a while ago.

Monkeyboy383: First thing to do is to get it in your mind that the Accord is going to be fairly slow unless you drop a lot of money into it. Otherwise you may spend several hundred dollars and be horribly disappointed. I love my Accord, it is a great car. But it is also quite a slow car.

Installing the intake isn't too bad. It depends on whether you are doing a CAI or a Short Ram. I went with the Short Ram because installation is easier and if I need to clean the filter, it's easier to get to. Installing a CAI will require removing your lower bumper, probably your passenger side wheel and pulling out the lower plastic components.

First you'll have to pull out all the plastic stock intake crap. There's quite a bit of it, let me tell ya. I kept mine incase I decide to sell the car later. In fact, I've kept everything except the stock exhaust. The thing that will suck for you is that if the Accord Wagon's intake is like the Accord Sedan's, than a bunch of the small pipes that you have to remove, are all welded together. This may include (as it did in mine) a water hose that has anti-freeze in it. If so, you'll have to drain out your anti-freeze to remove it. The small pipes (or hoses, whatever) are held on by small clamps, make sure you pull these to the center of the pipes if possible. I spent about 45 minutes trying to figure out why it wouldn't come off, only to realize one of the clamps wasn't off completely. Once everything is loosened and the stock intake is detached from the intake manifold, you should be able to pull it out as one big peice.

The spot where your air filter used to be will have a small plastic box under it. Don't worry about this, a lot of people do, but just pull all the little hoses off of it and take it out. There may be some un-screwing required. Remember, I'm doing this from memory.

If your intake is like mine, you'll be given a peice of foam and a rubber grommet. Take care when removing the stock intake, there are probably four small pipes that come off. You may only be given two replacement hoses, one for the vacuum hose (I think) and the other for the water hose. The other two places that had hoses in the past will be fitted with the foam peice and the rubber grommet. The rubber grommet goes on the one closest to the firewall, and the foam one goes on the one closest to the front of the car. If you have problems finding these, let me know and I'll send pics. I had to go online and search through page after page looking for pics to see where they went and confirm that I only needed (1) rubber grommet and (1) foam peice.

From there on it's pretty basic. Remember to put your anti-freeze back in, and to let your car sit for a while after installation. I checked over all the fittings about 10-15 times before taking it around the block. Than I came back and checked them all a few more times.

Some things to expect: Your new intake will make a slight almost whistling sound when the car is idling. Well, I don't know if I'd say it is a whistling, but it's certainly a constant tone. This is normal. When you press on the gas this will probably get a bit louder but it shouldn't be too loud from inside the car.

I've heard that CAI's are louder than Short Ram's, but I haven't compared two 94' Accords yet. I know my sister's boyfriend's CAI in his Jetta is louder than my Short Ram in my Accord.

Hope this helps!

cool. about the intakes, is there a major diff between short ram or cai (i'd rather do cai, but if the performance isn't 2 much different i'd just go w/ short ram 4 now). i know the accord's not gonna b the fastest (even though a 10-15 hp improvement sounds cool, i know it won't actually do too much).... until i buy the car from my mom when i leave 4 college(in 2-3 years) & put a turbo & a few other goodies on (cat back exhaust, swap out the A/T 4 a 5 speed, bigger & better fuel pump, ignition, ecu, the works). hopefully. 4 now i'm stickin 2 mild mods cause my ma would flip if i did any more. but thanks 4 all the response, keep it comin. hey, i know this is a longshot, but any1 know if i can advance the timing 2 take advantage of higher octane pump gas in the accord or my escort (u'd b my god if u can give me that 1)? thanks, l8r

Yeah don't expect too much horsepower gain from the cai or the short ram, although the sound you now produce is much cooler. I just installed my intake on my 95 accord sedan. I would deffinately go with the short ram just for accessibilty, it is way easier to clean the filter. I got mine off of ebay, a no name brand, but it works fine and installed really easy, but if you have the money go AEM.
