fifth cylinder misfire

My 99 camaro is experiencing a 5th cylinder misfire. it is losing power and the voltometer dropps when is does it. the alternator is new and the batery and the tune up was done last may. help i dont know what is wrong and dont want to spend big $$$ at the dealer to fix it. i'm sorry i forgot to mention it's the 3.8 v-6

If your sure that it's the number 5 cylinder then I would check your whole ignition system. First run it for codes. You can find them on line or check back here and someone will know what the code is. But if it's misfiring it could be the coil, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, computer, and a whole slew of other things. That LS1 is a complicated system so there is a lot to go wrong. I'm in no way shape or form an expert or very familier at all with that system so if my info is wrong I'm sorry. But there are a lot of experts on here with your system and I'm sure by the end of the day you'll have you solution.

99's still have a cap and rotor? i thought they used DIS

they do, its an individual coil on plug tecnology, all controled by a computer, look for a loose connection on the wire, a loose spark plug, did it start after the tune up? did you replace the wires or use the old ones? if you used the old ones, i am 90% sure thats your problem. when removing the wires to get to the plugs, it is very easy to pull the wire out of the terminal in the boot, at least enough to create a bad connection. if the voltage is dropping when this happens, it is grounding out to another source. probly burned through the wire to the block or something because there was no where else to go. but like 92RS said, run it for codes, best way to find out. everything is pretty much a random guess till you have something to go on.

it was new wire's done by the dealer the car was bought from. They were done back in may and it just started a month ago. i'm no mechenic and would do it myself but i cant tell where the plugs are due to the fact they run down the side where i cant see them. 3 wires go around the front and the other 3 (including the bad one) go down the back.

well best bet, in this case, save yourself alot of time and headache, and take it back to the dealership, you shouldnt have to pay for parts that failed that quick, or a job that wanst done right. i have news for everyone here, i work at a dealership, and trust me, it dont mean much to have the mechanics there do the work. alot of times it a mechanics assistant who does the work like that, and they may have only owned a tool set for a month when they start workign there. its very possible that whoever did the job did a crappy job on the plugs on the backside of the block, and it took a while to shake loose. in any case, if you screw with it, the dealer no longer has any reason to fix what you touched. just take it back, let them fix what they did wrong. thats my advice. dont get me wrong, i totally support that you want to do it yourself, but just not in this particular case.

I really need to learn the LS1. I think I'll buy "LS1 for dummies" tomorrow..LOL But hey, I'm good up to the LT1.
