383 stroker?

hello everyone

my friend has a 5.0 late model mustang, and he was wondering if its possible to use this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33620&item=2450994436) stroker kit for it, or do you have to have a 351w to use it? thanks.

Read the auction. 351's only.

is it me or is it always "a friend" that wants/needs/has something.

yeah i read the auction, but it confused me because the title said "mustang 5.0." im not versed on fords, as you can tell. and yes, it is my friend that has the mustang. we found another kit that is actually for the 302, to stroke it to a 331. he wants to eventually supercharge it, but it has 166,xxx miles on it. we thought that building the bottom end would be a good starting place, can anyone offer other ideas?

331 is a very good kit for the 302, best IMO.

If he want to boost, do not go above 9.5CR.

The VE is fairly low is a pushrod engine, but you do not want to push it.

347 is also a good choice. Unless you relly bore out the cylinders, the piston to wall stress will not be much of an issue, so go for the higher CI, and more torque.
you can still boost a 347, as long as the pistons are dished for lower comp.
or you can use heads with a larger Chamber.

thanks everyone

he decided to get the 331* kit as well as GT40P heads.

i know its a newbie question, but can anyone tell me if a 302 will directly bolt in a 6 cylinder mustang (1994-2002 models)? thanks.

He's going to spend the money to run a 331 stroker, but only use the P heads? Why??

I am with Hiflow :screwy:

There are a lot better heads. Why bottle neck the engine? What intake?

I am pretty sure, motor mounts will need to be changed.

AFR 185s, would be very nice for that engine.

Almost anything is better than the old-as-dirt gt 40's.
but maybe he's on a budget or something.
as far as the bolt on goes, yeah, you need a new motor mount kit, possibly a k-member and dpending on the tranny, a new bellhousing.

Only thing I would really suggest is stonger or better motor mouts then the stock ones. Since the 331 uses the same exact block as a 302, then everything else will work just fine.

but he said he was bolting it into a v6.
and a 96-02 model at that.
I doubt the old 302 will be a direct fit.

Hum, I must have missed that part. Although he didn't specifically say it was for a 94-02, just asked if it would fit.

thanks for all your info, but i gotta clarify some things.

My friend who has the 95 GT, is purchasing the 331 stroker. We both don't know anyone at all who knows anything about Fords, so we made the mistake of listening to the idiot at Pep Boys who told us that the GT40p heads are really good. Judging from your responses, that's not the case. We listened to SkylineUSA and looked up the AFR heads, and he said that he will probably purchase those after he gets paid.

The question about putting in a GT engine into a 6cyl is completley independant of his situation. I just wondered if it were possible. So if one were to do that, they would need obviously the motor and tranny, and engine mounts, crossmember, and bell housing? And thats all?

thanks.

Look closely at the AFR 185's, the pistons might need to be notched so you don't mangle the valves.

AFR 185s have a vavlve clearance issue? I know about TFS.

It would just depend on how big of a cam he will be running? What kind of lift are we talking here?

J_Spec_NiTeMaRe

For now he's keeping the stock cam. After he gets some more money, we're going to try and find a cam that will go well with the AFR 185s. We were thinking about the B303 because of its modest lift compared to other aftermarket cams.

Also, can anyone answer the GT swap question?

Building a 383 stroker motor with AFR heads and using the stock cam is really a waste in so many ways.

SkylineUSA

B cam is good, but there are a lot better.

TFS stage 1 or 2. Might want to look into another cam for blower.

Crane Powermax 2030, or 2031. Stay away from them alphabet cams, there's a lot better out there now.

Plus the motor is going to be apart for the head swap anway, that would be the perfect time to slap a cam in there.

no substitue for a custom grind.
it is worth at least 5-10 HP over an out of the box cam, and it is more important when you add forced induction.

True but you better know some1 or you better know what you are really doing when it comes to custom cams. A good cam guy can make a monster motor slow and a stock one rip, so you better start kissing his ass!

yeah, I talked to a guy who had to get 9 GRINDS!!
before he found one that was optimal.
but if you gotta have the best...

Alright thanks everyone, you guys are awesome. Next week the stroker kit should be here, at which point we will have to decide which cam to go with the AFRs. I will probably post back on advice for the blower

I fell into the FMS trap, they have alot of my money. I've tried almost all of them, an amature with a good paying job, living at home(I was 19 at the time), with no bills, a Mustang and parts list like a Chinese phone book. If I could go back 8 years with the knowhow I have now I could be running low 10s for the same price. I wasted alot of money that is muchneeded today. I'll never buy another b,e,f,x cam. They are a great improvement over stock but you could do ALOT better if you just look at whats out there.

SkylineUSA

I have seen some very good numbers with the b and the f cams. They are not that bad. If I could do it all over again, I would have gone with the TFS stage one, or the 2030.

The FMS cams are still okay but you guys are right there are alot better out there now,if you dont want to go custom the Comp cams "extreme" line works very well.On the other hand a B cam with its 480 lift will not take advantage of the fact that the AFR's continue to flow up to around 550 lift, tell your buddy that matching up all the components is what makes a fast stang not how much $$ you spend (it would seem that a few of us have found this out the hard and expensive way!!).

That is why you go with 1.7RR, 226/226 510/510 112 is a little better for breathing.

onefastlx

True that, but he'd still be missing out the heads potential somewhat!

SkylineUSA

Like I said, if I could have done it over, I would not have chosen the B cam.

That's what I'm doing, in hopes for a little more out of my E type cam.

With 1.7 RR, would he need high lift clearance valve covers?

And also with the 510 lift, how would you make it so the valves don't hit the pistons?

SkylineUSA
01-08-2004, 12:20 PM
.510, no valve clearance issues.

I fabricated a new oil splash sheild (The actual name escapes me right now) out of aluminum. I concaved it for extra clearnace. Just to make sure I doubled up on the valve cover gaskets.

I do not know about you guys, but I really like the looks of the stock valve covers.

My buddy has a finishing setup in his back yard shop. Its pretty small but we can chrome and powder coat. We can't chrome anything larger than a rim but this is still o so cool. It has only been setup 3 weeks and the only thing I have chromed are my factory valve covers. It used them as a pair of lab rats but they turned out nice. You would think I knew what I was doing. I have already sold them. A friend of mine home from the Air Force saw them sitting on my living room floor and had to have them.

Now that is cool having a chrome plating facility in your "backyard" care to guinea pig my upper intake?? (JK).

OK, here's the deal it's not my shop but I've been involved it's planning and construction so I can use it at will, and it is the main work area for my his 93 Cobra and my GT. We do intend to make money first and make our stuff shine second. Right now we are not ready to "open shop" , I have nothing but time invested but my friend has about $50k invested, and is being screwed by the company who supplied the equipment. He is still short most of the powder coat parts. In two weeks he is flying to New Jersey for court. Until them I'm not sure when we will be in business. I will let you know soon but, yes for a small fee I will make your upper shine just like mine is going to.
