WRX iPod Setup

I knew I wanted a way to run my iPod (http://www.apple.com/ipod)'s audio through the WRX's sound system. I also knew I wanted to put my Sony receiver in. So, I killed two birds with one stone. Sorry for the lack of install pics.

Installing the head unit was a pain, but the system has an auxiliary audio-in port. I ran an RCA to 1/8" adapter from the back of the unit up through the heating vents and out of where the clock goes. Very simple.

However, I didn't want to leave it at that. I wanted a way to charge the iPod. So, I bought XtremeMac (http://www.xtrememac.com/)'s iPod car charger. I took apart the car-charger end and ran it into the wiring from the back of my cigarette lighter (with an inline fuse for my iPod's sake). I plugged the iPod charger and 1/8" audio cable into the back of an iPod dock that I bought from Apple, plugged in my iPod and voila. It works as you might expect. I haven't stuck the iPod dock down, so I can angle it towards me as I drive. The rubber coating on the bottom of the dock makes it so I can press the iPod's buttons and not move the whole unit. The audio is crystal clear. Now I don't just have 10,000 songs in my pocket, I have them in my WRX as well. :D

When I get gauges in a dash-top pod, I'm going to move the dock and wiring to the retractible cup holder. That way when it's closed, it's invisible; when it's open, I have music.

Perhaps, but I simply remove the iPod and put it into the carrying case when I leave the car. I have it on my person constantly anyways.

And I'm hoping to move it to the cupholder soon.

Thanks for the word of encouragement. The car lives in a garage. I've had the player almost 2 years.

Thanks. I'm going to start moving it to the cupholder today. Next time you're in your car, reach all the way to where the clock is. It's sort of a pain. Then reach to the cupholder... perfect. Now I just need a trip to the hardware store (it's gotta match! Lets see... brushed aluminum (a-la the new iPod mini (http://www.apple.com)) or mirror finish (like my current iPod).
