Those things are pretty damn fast...or at least the one I saw last night was. I was getting on the freeway. As soon as the on ramp straightened out I gave it about 3/4 throttle up to 70mph. He stayed right with me no problem. I stayed in the right lane cuz mine was the first exit, but he flew around me on the left side and was doing 100mph in no time at all. Judging by the halogen headlights I thought it was an Infinti FX at first when I looked in my rear view. But when he went flying by me I saw on the back it said "Cayenne Turbo". It also had dual exaust and sounded pretty cool...almost like the SVT Lightning. That thing was quick!

No fair. Those rich bastards get leather, cruise control, 12 second clips, and enough cargo room for all their friends and their kids. I'm jealous. Gotta tip my hat to Porsche though. That thing was designed for soccer moms on nose candy! :D

At $95,000 for the Turbo model you don't see many of them... although in my area i've seen quite a few.
Of course it's all financed so they're going to be in debt foreverrr. Can you imagine what the monthly payments are on one? Even for a 60 month (5 year) term. Not including finance charges or tax or any of the other dealer fee's that get tacked onto or any options. If you got the Turbo model at $95,000 your monthly payment with a 60 month term would be $1583. Then insurance on a new vehicle... sheesh man that's some serious cash.
Crazy. :screwy:

Porshe postponed their LeMans participation so they could focus on the Cayenne. As a company they lost a large chunk of respect from their fans. The Porshe mystique is kind of faded for me, too.
I like how CAR magazine put it in their little rating system
Do Mention: It's as quick as the Boxter.
Don't Mention: It weighs twice as much.
BMW is getting evil too. They have too many commercials now that leave me to believe that somebody with dollar signs in his eyes is runnin' thangs in Munich. Anybody notice that BMW used to have like two commercials on a week? Like on PBS? Now they have these stupid cutesy adds all over. Ugh.

Wrong.

Read up:
"The Carrera GT was developed from an open-cockpit racing prototype designed to Le Mans LM 900 regulations requiring a minimum weight of 900 kg. Unfortunately it was never raced, following Porsche's decision to suspend its factory-backed racing activities. The first experimental prototype had proven to be very competitive, and rather than cancel the entire project, the racing bodywork was replaced with a superb roadworthy roadster body, which became the star of the 2000 Paris motor show."
And another:
By increasing the bore of the 5.5-liter engine originally developed for Porsche's Le Mans racing program, the new 5.7-liter V-10 boasts abundant power from its position amidships in the Carrera GT.
Everything that was supposed to go into the LeMans racer was re-developed to go into the Carrera GT.

And NO, the Cayenne and the Carrera GT do NOT have the same motor.
http://www.derpca.com/Porscheforme/CarreraGT%2010-00.htm
"During introduction of the Carrera GT, Porsche officials dispelled rumors its LeMans inspired engine will be used in its upcoming sport utility vehicle, Cayenne, due to be introduced in 2002. Porsche officials also noted the Carrera GT is "pure racing technology" developed for everyday use."
Wrong.

I'm with Bunta, though. The money Porsche spent on that blasphemous behemoth should've been spent racing. Plain and simple.
Porsche builds sports cars, not trucks. The Cayenne is just a dig for money. No member of the Porsche family, not even Butzi, would've signed off on this aberration.

I meant that he was wrong about why Porsche abandoned LeMans. He said they did it to build the Cayenne.
The Cayenne was already almost complete before they decided to quit their LeMans factory-backing.
I was just pointing-out that they at least had a noble quest when they abandoned LeMans...to build a genuine Porsche übercar.

Quite simply put, Porsche needs the Cayenne to make money.
The 996 platform is getting up there in the years, the 986 needs some revision, possibly a 3.4 liter version :naughty: , Porsche is developing a new GT car, which is to share the Cayenne engine...
Porsche made a great deal of money off of the 924 and 944, and invested that in making new and competitive products. Porsche doesn't make enough of a profit from Boxsters and 911s to build new factories, or even design new cars.

Still, a porche suv is an abomination. I thought porche, of all brands, would resist the suv craze. Now there is not a single mass producer of cars that does not make an suv (that I can think of atm.) Oh well, I guess we'll be safe untill ferrari and tvr jump on the bandwagon...

I can tell your love and understanding of Porsche run deeply, judging from the spelling and capitalization of the P ;)
It's a rebadged VW Touareg, with a new V8 that they want to use in their upcoming grand touring car. It will make lots of money for Porsche, and allow many great new Porsche models to be made.
Personally, I think they should make a cheap front engined sports car based on VW GTI mechanicals.

I'd ditch the GTI's suspension though, as I've heard it's not the best.
As for my love of Porsche (happy? ;) ), it runs as deeps as my love for Ferrari and TVR (neither of which I capitalized.)

The Cayenne's have had some pretty good off-road driving reviews here in AUS. Although they are not quite as good off the tar as a dedicated 4WD (ie Land Rover) they aren't far behind.
This vehicle can pull off a 13.79 quarter... Not bad since it weighs twice as much as a Boxter!

Porsche wants to be independent
So they need a car that is would be profitable, and this is when the Cayenne pops out.
Working with Volkswagen, they have Volkswagen build the car alongside with its sibling, the Touareg in Slovakia, then Porsche mounts the engine in Germany and calls it Made in Germany.
So the Cayenne is born in Slovakia then "naturalized" in Germany and fools people that it is German.
