96 sable, 121k, 3.0 engine, check eng. light, code reads "impeller speed sensor circuit malfunction". Need help in locating/replacing this sensor. Tranny shifts very hard from 1st into 2nd unless I accel very slow. Also, when shifting from park into drive, rpms increase from idle to about 12-1400 and trans slams into gear. I'm told this sensor measures the impeller (or input shaft) speed to determine engine speed, shift points, etc. Can I replace this one myself? Where exactly do I find it? Thank you in advance for any help...

Hi: Try front of engine by timing tab. Look for small black unit with wire coming out to a harness. Some real hard to see until you remove the drive belt. These sensor units must be aligned properly, so be careful and reposition carefully. Mark all these types of units prior to removale ( whiteout works good or a yellow paint ball pen) so you can reposition the new unit exactly.
