Does the engine have to be pulled for pulley replacement?

I have a 97 grand voyager. One of the pulleys is making chirping noises so I took it to my mechanic. He said he had to pull the engine to find out which pulley it is and replace it. Is he trying to rip me off or is he right?

It is easier but totally unnecessary to pull the motor to replace a bad pulley. He's looking to make a lot of money for a useless procedure. Put the van on a hoist or ramps and replace the bad pulley. I've done this on several cars over the years and have not had much difficulty with it.

Heck no. I'd pull the tranny first. If after that you don't find it, then pull the engine. If you still don't find it, install @58 pounds of C4 in the glove box and set it off with a 1/2 inch fuse!!
