I installed my new K&N Cold Air Intake today. I noticed that the Air Flow Sensor as a wire mesh screen on one side of it. I was wondering if anybody has ever cut the mesh out of the sensor and if so what did it do. I have looked on line to buy a aftermarket one, but they want close to $400 for it. The sensor llok the same except the wire mesh screen on the stock one. I was wondering if you cut it will it hurt. It could save someone $400 that could be used on another mod. Please advice on the please. I am thinking about cutting the mesh screen out to make it a max air flow sensor like the aftermarket ones.
Thanks,

Mass airflow sensors contain electronic circuitry that measure temp and airflow. It sends these measurements to the vehicles onboard computer to adjust timing, spark, fuel mixture, among other things. I have seen people talk about cutting the screen out have said that they have a check engine light afterwards. I would suspect that the screen is part of the electronic sensing element in the OEM MAFS.
Ask yourself, "If it was just that easy (cutting out the screen) wouldn't everybody do it to save $400?"

the screen is used to break up the air flow before is reaches the sensors. i would leave well enough alone, the mods you do won't make much difference, save your money and install a programmer and change the rear differential gears to a lower gear.

Yes, and you don't have to cut it out. You can simply pop the entire screen out with a screw driver. This is one of the free mods we can do to our silverados. It has the same effect as buying one of the granatelli mass air flow sensors. Just remember not to hit the sensors with the screwdriver.
