how much trouble to shave side moldings?

i really wanna take off the molding on the side of my cav. how much trouble is that?

i hear not hard at all...just take fishing string to it and do the sawing action...then some adhesive remover that wont hurt the paint job... there might be more steps, however haven't done it yet...i think i saw a guy on cardomain.com with a cavvy that shaved em off. might check it out.

are there any holes under the moldings that may have to b filled in?

Bump. I'm interested in this too. Also can factory pinstriping be taken off without damaging the paint underneath?

No there are no holes under the moldings. They only use double side tape on them and the fishing string works beautifully, I used it on my 03 Silverado to take all of the moldings and badging off of it, then used a buffer from work to get the rest of the adhesive off.

So i should use fishing line on the side moldings, and how bout the emblems(cavalier,chevrolet sign)????? You really sure fidhing line will take it off?? If it does there wont be no need to paint anything???

The emblems come off easily too, they are just held on with foam tape. I would not use fishing line though if I were you. You can carefully use a small flat-head screwdriver to pry them off but just get the edge of the emblems and dont touch the paint. The adhesive can be scraped off with your fingernail and you can use adhesive remover to get the rest off. Any kind should work and it wont hurt the paint. If you can, get ahold of some prep solvent used in auto body work. This stuff works best to get the adhesive off.

By the way I did all of this on my car (cavalier, Z24, and bowtie) and it worked great. Nothing needs painting unless you slip with the screwdriver. The factory paint is very tough. I went to an autobody shop to ask about taking some painted on pinstriping off and they told me to use oven cleaner. It worked for me and if oven cleaner wont damage paint i dont think much will. I heard to get the emblems off is to use a hair dyer or a heat gun but make sure you dont get to close to the paint(duh). I havent done it personally but had someone else take mine off!!

I took mine 2 days after buying my car in 98, but i have a freind who has
a blue 96 and he just got me to take them off, and after we did there was noticable paintfade throughout the rest of the car, so maybe take of one of your emblems first
