DOHC Non-Vtech(137hp) vs. SOHC Vtech(125)

the popular ZC or the D16Z6?

i've narrowed down to either one of these, but im not sure which will be better.
is the V-tec going to make that much of a difference?
or will the DOHC with a slight more hp make more of a difference?

this will be a daily driver and i don't want to have anything to do with turbo-charging it or NO2, and im thinking of maybe getting into solo I. im sure this has been asked before but haven't taken the time to go back and look at all the threads. i just want to know whats going to be a quicker car with basic bolt stuff like intake, ignition wires, full exhaust, but nothing too serious and also im not sure how widely available these parts are available and whats going to cost what

thanx in advance for the help

Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic ControlH? no H dude. go with the z6, the zc doesnt have as much aftermarket parts as the z6. and the zc is 130 hp.

Yeah you'll be able to find more parts for the z6 than for the dohc zc.

Look at it this way... You want a daily driver..?

Use the ZC, much torquier low down than the Z6. Plus, vtec only kicks in at very high RPM's... good for drag racing, totally impractical for town driving, because you have to virtually redline it everytime to enjoy the benefits of vtec...

How often are you going to use vtec for everyday driving...?

zc's are pieces of shyt, you can get one sure it'll be new to you but its been around the block and beat around in atleast one other car, they are pieces of crap! not very reliable, heard many stories on timing belt snapping, im not saying get a z6 or single cam im just stating my opinion on the zc

Dude, you're hating on a motor that's been around for 14 years... and is still more powerful than most compact production engines.

But wether he gets a ZC or a Z6, it will have mileage. All those complaints probably come from guys who dropped theirs in straight from the junkyard or importer, without opening the motor or doing an overhaul...

Overhaul the ZC (or ANY other motor you buy), and you will have reliability again...

As for timing belts snapping... three letters... O E M.

Or another good way to make sure the old timing belt doesn't snap is BUY A NEW ONE AND INSTALL IT WHEN YOU PUT IN THE ENGINE, lol. Save you the hassle of having to change it later on when the engine is in the car.

I personally like both engines. they are very equally matched in power.

I personally think the ZC is a great engine and i would use one anyday. the only beef people have with ZC is that "you cant find parts" which isnt true, you just cant go to Pepboys and order cam set like you can for the SOHC VTEC, which you can basically go to walmart and buy parts for.

the DOHC ZC is essentially a 1.6L B18A... i've had both apart and the internals of the head design look exactly the same. the engines are designed in the same way.

It all comes down to personal preference.. most people chose the SOHC VTEC because you can find parts for it everwhere, and since its a USDM engine, you can usually verify its past life (did it come out of a wrecked car, okay you know it runs good.... look at the car's mileage, etc. etc.)

But then again, i've known the DOHC ZC to be a hard running engine and i would personally love to have one.

If the guy SethDX/ZC or whatever comes on here, he is still around, let him tell you his impression of the ZC.. he has a fully built engine.

I would prefer the z6 over the ZC just for the fact that there is alot more aftermarket support for the Z6. Replacing parts for the z6 will be cheaper and easier to find than the ZC.

well seth doesnt come on here much of any more ... that i know of ...

but what i can tell you is that yes, the ZC is not a comely supported engine at places like pep boys and other retail chains but you can find parts online at aftermarket retailers. So its not like there is nothing and if you bother to do a little work on google im sure you can find anything you need.

why is this now? because its not a USDM engine so why would any standard retail chain carry shit for it? its not their fault you bought a better JDM engine. but anyways, there have been plenty of threads here about parts equavilants and what not so it wont be to hard.

but if you want a dailer driver ... i would recommend the dock zc simply because you can run the engine at a lower rpm and get a bit better gas milage then revving the crap outa the sock vtech to take advantage of the vtech. but again its all a matter of taste and whats available in your area.

happy trails ...

I have a ZC and I like it. Check out www.thezcresource.com . There is some aftermarket for the ZC you just have to look for it.
