Supra vs. Skyline?

2 of my friends have a hyped race on a drag strip this coming weekend. Friend 1 has a Skyline with about 20k invested, and the other has a 98 Supra with about 15k. I don't really know the specifics of what they have, cuz they like to keep their shit under wraps. It's a straight out 1/2 mile drag strip and they're two of the best drivers in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. I'm leaning towards the Skyline simply because he has more experience and more invested. What do you all think?

sounds like kids with too much money if you ask me.
on a serious note though, probably the supra.

its too hard to tell, there is not enough info. i would bet on the supra also...that is, unless the skyline has a RWD conversion. then who the heck knows. it is a 1/2 mile and not a 1/4 mile, so i would still bet on the supra, but it would be closer.
(most people will be like, "huh, but the skyline has AWD". the true enthusiasts will understand)

Don't forget the Skyline isn't a slouch stock... if it truely has twenty thousand dollars put into it... the AWD advantage will not only help it out of the hole, but help keep it ahead as well.
The Supra will probably have mad topend pull... hard to say with out facts on each car.
My guess is Skyline.

Lemme clear-up a big misconception about the Skyline: The ATTESSA system allows the Skyline to be only RWD when the rear-wheels are gripping, meaning that when rolling, it's just like the Supra...as they both weigh about the same. Hence, no major "disadvantage" for the Skyline from a roll.
This means that the Skyline will have the advantage on launch, and depending on the lead, is capable of staying in front. Depending...
The most important detail about either car is: "how did they spend all that cash?"
If one of them spent $5,000 on gold-plated, braided brake-lines, then the other one wins.
Mod-for-mod though, I'd give the advantage to the Skyline.

thank you for speaking on that, i hate in when people try and say the awd on a skyline is a disadvantage, when its only awd when needed.

correct me if im wrong but awd on straights can be a disadvantage, but since a skyline is a high model it displaces power to the rear when they have grip.

Did you read my last post, and the quote of it right above yours?
Also, only the GT-R has the ATTESSA system. "Skyline" isn't a high-model per sé. Skylines are like the Mustangs of Japan.
The Mustang has the Cobra, the Skyline has the GT-R, the Mustang has the GT, the Skyline has the GT-St, then there's the V6 'Stang, and the base Skylines with no turbo at all, and there's various other trims and levels. There's even 4-dr Skylines.

I'd say skyline if they both have the same amount of HP. The supra will get wasted everytime off the line. There is absolutely no chance of the supra beating the skyline if the horse power is the same. Not unless of course driver error.
you can always take a look at Best Motoring Internation Vol 5. They show why the Supra won't beat the Skyline in a straight line. Thats 550hp Supra and 550hp Skyline.

What are you talking about. I have heard too many kids like you saying that the Skyline AWD is a what means the Supra will win on the straight. ERM No do you know how the ETTESSA ETS Pro works?
To launch a skyline:
Full RPM dump clutch power is too great for rear. Power is thus sent to the front. Lots of traction. Skyline launches hard and accelerates hard its gone.
And for that matter. What type of Skyline? if its a GTS or lower then its going to be close.

hummm tough call. A too much depends on as mentioned where they spent the money. If they are mod to mod and kept street legal (no slicks), power output and suspenions are the same I would choose the GTR.
Now quickly there are so many different versions of the Skyline.
R32
GXi - CA18 4 cyl
GTE - RB20E 6cyl
GTS - RB20DE
GTS25 - RB25DE
GTS-t RB20DET
GTS4 - RB20DET 4wd(same as GTR)
GTR - RB26DETT 4wd
R33
GTS RB20E (have no idea why they went backward to a sohc)
GTS25 - RB25DE
GTS25t - RB25DET (this is not a GTS-t, it is badged and named GTS25t)
GTS4 - RB25DE 4wd(non-turbo O_o)
GTR - RB26DETT 4wd
R34
GT RB20DE
GT4 RB25DE 4wd
GT-T RB25DET (NEO)
GTR -RB26DETT

Now the ATTESSA system is more complex then this. It takes readings and signals from G-force sensors, the ABS cogs, and throttle postion sensor. You will get front wheel torque without loss of traction. Any mild acceleration will invoke a slight bit. Obviously the harder you accelerate the greater the amount of front wheel torque/power is applied within reason. Generally if you are not losing traction you can achieve about 7% which is just enough to keep the car straight if there is a sudden extreme loss of traction. Also on a hard shift will give quite a bit. Think of it as preguessing the car is going to break the rears free. This is why the GTR is so stable on many different surface conditions.
Now guys you have to get a few things straight. The GTS in any model year is a non-turbo. The top model is the GTS25 which makes about 147hp stock. To get more it is very expensive other than minor amounts. So in light of that if your mate has a GTS he would get the streets whiped with a Turbo supra.
Me thinks the skyline, cos it looks better. Mmmmmm Beef. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/gives.gif
Then don't post in threads like this, pretty simple isn't it.

cool, i am still learning. i just thought since it was a 1/2 mile course, the supra would pull up top. also, i said that this could not be determined with the amount of info given. i was just giving my opinion. i am still learning, as i hope all of us are. 1/4 mile course i would say skyline.

Thought about adding it, but since it wasn't actually produced by the Nissan Factory I left it out. That and only a few were ever truely produced by Nismo. I honestly have forgotten the exact number but it was less than 10 in total.
