how would you know if your piston rings are bad or you need new valve seals, for my 93 teq ls? im seeing little black specs on my bumper(on a wht teq) and my friend was following me the other day and said that he can smell my car, but when im racing my car he can only see a puff of smoke whn i shift. is that bad or is it cause i have 180k miles?

check your coolant. is it low? if so, is your oil cloudy looking? might be head gasket. when you first start it up on a normal day, is there white smoke coming form it. W/o doing a compression test you can see if the head gasket is bad.
run it for a minute. then turn it off, let it sit for 5 min. then remove one spark wire and plug and turn ov er the engine. if water come flying out, your head gasket is toast. try this with 3 or 4 of the sparkes waiting 5 mintes between. beyaond that, i'm not sure what esle it might be. I just have a lot of experience dealing with Head gaskets. good luck

hmm good suggestion. ill give that a try. about a couple of months ago i was changing out my spark plugs and i accidentally dropped a nut down in one of my chambers. i kinda ghetto'd my engine to get the nut out of chamber 3. i lifted the head just enough for my girlfriend to stick her skinny hand down there and then put the head back. later i found out that i was so lucky that i did not blow my head gasket. and was told that anytime that you take off your head that you are supposed to replace the head gasket. but i will give that one a shot. thnx

w/ 180K I would port and polish the head, and get the a rebuild kit from autozone. and a hayse manuel with all the torque specs for how tight the nuts should be.

i don't mean to sound newb here but, when you mean rebuild kit you mean engine kit? and how much does a port polish usually cost?

rebuild/engine kit about $500 depends on how much you want done to the head. a mild job w/ valves is about $400(+10hp) a heave job runs about $1500(+35hp)
