How can I tell if my '99 4Runner Limited has an alarm system? I got screwed by the dealer and only received the grey sub-key (valet key) and no masters or remotes. I just bought 2 remotes off of eBay and will make an attempt to program them once I get them later this week. Now, I am wondering whether this thing has an alarm on it or not. All help is appreciated. Thank you and Happy New Year!

I have a 99 4Runner and i asked the same question when I bought it because it looked like it had a security system but as it turns out it doesn't. I was able to get them to add it on for a couple hundred extra but unless the original bowner did that you don't have an alarm or a real security system.

Hey SQZDOG,
Did you get a key made to start the engine?
I have only 1 gray key also and dealer told me that my 2000 4runner Limited needs a new ECU for $1200 to get a set of black and gray keys.........
I don't get it. If someone loses their black key, they have to pay $1200 for a whole new set?

Yes, here's what you have to do to get this done much cheaper:
Go to the dealer and tell them that you lost your black keys. Don't tell them you bought the car somewhere else, etc. Just tell them you lost your black keys. I know, sounds kind of sneaky, but trust me-- they stick it to you whenever they can.
Toyota will, as a courtesy, replace your ECU free. You just have to agree to purchase two new keys with programming. Still a rip-off though
Good luck and let me know how it works out.
