Is the RX8/RX7 the only cars with rotary engines? and What is the disadvantage to this kind of engine? I have heard that you need to warm it up more before accelerating.

RX-2, RX-3 and RX-5 too. Disadvantage: horrid emissions, gas hog, low torque, easy to break. And every car should be at operating temperature before hard acceleration.
*edit: and REPU too, Rotary Engined Pick-Up

Was there an RX-4?
First was the Cosmo 110 I believe, then the Cosmo Sport (6th car).
Emissions can be passed fine, but you lose power.
Bad fuel economy? Yes.
Useless below 3000RPM? Yes.
Unreliable? Generally, yes.
Fun? YES!! :D

I heard that in late 60's a F1 team tried using rotary engines but they got bankrupt the next year since the car was too slow.

"Bad fuel economy? Yes"
The fuel economy of the RX8s doesn't look that bad. Its 20mpg. My grand am has the same city milage and a higher highway milage and only gives me 2/3 of that power. Am I missing something here?? By the way they both have the same curb weight.

The EPA is who does fuel economy ratings, not manufacturers. You will NEVER see what the EPA says the car does in ANY car.
Also a bit of history: Mazda is the only Japanese manufacturer to win Le Mans. Using a rotary powered car no less! :)

They say you have to let that oil circulate around the inside of the engine. It has a different oil flow than that of a conventional engine. I would let the engine warm a little BEFORE accelerating hard. But that's with EVERY type of car, isn't it?

technically you should be warming up the engine on every car before you drive it, but more so on a rotary powered car. its also not a bad idea to let the car cool down for a little while after you drive it before you turn it off.

Maybe mustang is too much of a muscle car for rotary engine but a 5.0L rotary engine on mustang would sure appeal to me!!! How many hp would that give anyway??
spirit_r

5.0L rotary??? holy shit. well if you take the rx-8 renesis engine for example, 1.3 litres at 238bhp, 5.0 litres would give you about 915bhp. Those rotors would be insanely huge. you'd need to have at least 3 rotors in there to keep the size down. or at least 2 reeeealy wide rotors.

before you ask yourself "WHATS WRONG WITH THE ROTARY ENGINE" ask yourself this.. "WHY CANT MY PISTONS TRANSFORM into a smooth-ass ROTARY" and i agree with spirt r... NO AMERICAN CAR deserves something as advanced as a rotary engine. they should be grateful that they even have pistons.... lol
