What Exactly Makes The Si Heavier?

Magik Si

I've been told that the 90 HB-Si I am driving now as opposed to my old STD is much heavier...but no one really has given me specifics on "what" makes it heavier...are there specific parts that make it heavier? Is the car itself just built out of a different material that makes it heavier?

Can anyone give me specifics?

Thanks,

Jason

sunroof, and rear sway bar are two things that would definetly make a difference in weight.

No dude...haven't gotten the harness yet :( I'm sure it will show up though...but if you want to try and track it...that'd be great! :)

PS> Anyone else have any input on what makes the Si so much heavier?
or a thread link or anything?

things that are heavier in the Si....

seats
rear sway bar & hardware
more sound deadening
engine is bigger & heavier
sun roof
AC (option on STD, standard on Si)

years also make a difference as the 88-89s didnt have door side impact beams and some other small things as opposed to 90-91

As far as my STD & Si both are 90's...

Seats...not sure if they are the stock seats in the Si or not...

Sound deadening!? Really...can't say as I've noticed...still seems like a LOT of exterior noise gets in...

Engine: not stock...swapped before I bought it...in it D15B2 on it's last legs...going in it D15B1 out of the STD.

Sunroof...how much difference can that make?

AC...niether car has AC and it was never in the Si...no controls for it or anything...

Anything else?

I actually never intended to drive it...I bought it for $325 as a "parts car"...for the STD that was working great but needed some work...

Then about a month later I got cut off by a Dodge Ram at an intersection and smashed my STD and only got a $1000 CDN for my car from the insurance...now I have to drive my parts car and am in the process of switching my D15B1 into my Si because I can't afford another engine...I know the engine from the STD works great...I am keep the 5 speed tranny of the Si and the MPFI of the Si...I am having the engined swamped in a week for $350...and basically that's all I can do...

I have been told that the D15B1 with the MPFI should put out about 100hp which is close to the D16A6 Stock engine anyway (-8hp)...so I can live with that...

That's why...:)

Can anyone suggest something I can do to make the car lighter...but still perform as it does or better...and I'm not talking strip it down for dragging...just maybe a part that weighs 50lbs...that I can get an equivalent part that performs the same function and to the same caliber that weighs 25lbs? I don't know...I'm just trying to get the most out of a bad situation...sigh..

carbon fiber hood will save you weight over stock....dunno how much or if you want to spend the money on it, but it will def save weight.....plus it looks so sexy

Hehe, i once had a DX d15b motor in my Si for about a few months. It sure wasnt as fast as the D16a6 even with the MPFI on the D15b, but it got me around town.

As for shaving some weight off the Si, Id suggest a carbon fiber sunroof plug and hood. That will shave a good 75lbs off i am guessing. Also take out the spare tire, that thing is way heavy.

No 88-91 Honda civic/crx came with A/C from the factory - dealer installed.

Si does not have p/s

Sunroof makes a big difference between a plain roof/sheet metal. You got reienforcments, motor, glass, wiring, etc.

this has nothing to do with anything but i'm going to offer it up anyways....

the 90-91 si is heavier than the 88-89. i assume because of the seatbelt's being mounted to the door

you know those annoying seatbelts that are always getting stuck in the door? don't have that in the 88-89. the belt is mounted to the car, not the door.

which is why i went with the 89. sure the 88-89 has the gh3y screw holes in the corner lights...but i fixed that problem with a 90-91 fender conversion :)

I have a 90 and it's seatbelts are mounted inside the car...not to the door...??

I get confused about the whole door/pillar mounted seatbelts. My friend has an 89 CRX and his seatbelts are mounted in the doors just like my 91 hatch. I have another friend with an 88 CRX and his are mounted on the pillar. Another friend has an 88 hatch and his are mounted on the pillar, as well as my brothers 89 4 door.

I dunno what the deal is, but i think some 89's came out with door mounted seatbelts and some came with pillar mounted seatbelts. his DX CRX also came with a tach

I know it wasnt modified because some old lady and her husband bought it new, and then it sat in a field at their house for like 3 years before he bought it.

That is confusing because mine are mounted on the pillar and the bottom is on the floor just behind/beside the back of the drivers'passenger seat...but how can the seatbelts have anything to do with weight? They aren't that heavy are they?

well on 90-91 cars, the doors have a big bulge in the door for all the seatbelt mechanisms and motors, that has to add quite a lot of weight.

i just broke my driver side window so i went to get a replacement for it. the guy asked me if it was the window with the seat belts mounted on the doors or on the pillars. it turns out "he told me". that if you look in the opening of the driver side door it will tell you if it was manufactured in the u.s or canada. he told me that the hondas made in us have the seat belts on the pillar. they both also use two different types of glass.
just in case you bust a window.

ok, heres the deal on seatbelts

In the USA
88-89 civic's had them on the pillar, 90-91 had them in the doors.
88 crx's had em in the pillar and 89-91 had them in the door.

In Canada
88-91 civics had them on the pillar.

Magik Si

ummm....ok...so my car is a Canadian manufactured Si...it has seat belts on the pillar...a sun roof and a soon to be swapped in D15B1 with the Si MPFI & ECU. It has the stock seats...and pretty much everything else is stock...no A/C, no P/S, no P/anything (other than the sunroof).

So...how bad a shape am I in?
