power window lift motor 84 full size blazer

"new" 84 blazer's tailgate window lift motor works for a little while, then stops. Allow time for cool-off, and it works a little more. I suspect the motor is near death and would like to replace it, along with the keyed switch which doesn't work at all.

I don't want to break any rules here--I'm a new member--and when I scanned the rules I didn't notice any problems with mentioning commercial sources, but some forums don't do it. So, If it's allowable, does anyone know of a source of either the motor or the switch. The motor is a special order item at the dealer, and runs in excess of $150.

This vehicle was a credit union repo and has lots of issues. The exhaust stopped under the driver's feet. It was a noisy drive home and to the muffler shop, but now that's taken care of. Front drive line spline is stripped out and condition of the other 4x4 components is still uncertain.

But right now I need that tailgate lift motor. :banghead: Any advice would be welcome. After looking at a lot of recent posts I notice that very few involve blazers as old as my '84 are mentioned. Does anyone know if there are other forums which focus on the older full size blazers? Thanks. CB

$210 later, front drive line is replaced and other components seem to be working. Maybe I got lucky. Have found source of $75 (O'riley's) rebuilt lift motor, still shopping for more reasonable one. Any other folks with older blazers out there?

My tires are 31" tall. Can I go bigger without lifting? CB

Never hurts to give ebay a try. If its a full size blazer you should be able to fit 33s under it,

I have the same problem with my 84 K5. we found that its the switch on the dash not the motor. I had to replace the switch for my drivers side window switch and everyone ( the parts stores ) kept telling me I needed the whole engine. But we started small and didnt have to work to big.

the switch you can get at your local parts house try taking the motor out and cleaning the brushes with some fine steel wool

the other thing you can try is the gate switch may be dirty try cleaning the contacts on that. I had the same problems with my 83. that did the trick. As long as you don't have running boards on yours 33's fit very nicely. That is what is on mine!!

AutoZone finally came up with the replacement motor. Works fine now. Still need to chase down the key switch problem and the non-functioning interlock which I have jumpered. (glass will lift with tailgate in any position right now.) CB
