D15B2 Question

It looks like I'm at a fork in the road with my 89 REX DX. It has the factory D15B2 motor in it. I've been having some oil consumption problems ( 1/2 quart every 500 miles). I think I have the following choices now.

1. Repair the valve guides/seals

2. Rebuild the engine

3. Relpace the engine.

Money is an issue so, I'd like to stick with the most economical route. I also like my fuel economy... (40.65 MPG on trip this weekend!)

With money being a huge factor, which route should I take? Do you know of any other options?

go with an engine swap just drop in like 1.6 v-tec out of like a 92-95 or something, should beable to pick up one of them engines real cheap, shit I just sold one for 250.00 had like 130,000 on it..

seriously, i dont know nuffin about cars but my jiffy lube guy always sugjests using thicker oil first before doing anything. I was having about the same oil loss, ~.75 quarts every 1k miles and that dropped from the 1quart every 1k miles just from the thicker oil.

Well if that's the case, you do like i do with my truck - check the oil whenever you get gas, and buy cheap oil by the carton so you have it on hand :D

But yeah, going up a grade in oil might be worth a shot, i think they also have some sort of seal conditioner you can buy to add to your oil that may or may not help, never tried it.

Thanks for the help folks. I'll try the thicker oil route first. I'd rather stay away from the engine swap for now. I'd love to go with that 1.6L VTEC. That's just a little out of my price range right now. Wouldn't I have to not only buy the engine but also a new ECU and Fuel injection setup?

To move to any of the engines made after 92, or the D16A6 engine, you will need to wire in MPFI. Don't worry about having to buy anything except a resistor box (found cheap in a yard) and 4 lengths of wiring. You will need an ECU, but you can probably find one on the cheap too.

the oil loss you having is nothing. i used to go through 2 quarts every week when i drove it hard due to my piston rings. i wouldnt bother with it right now if your tight on money your really not lossing enough oil to really worry about it. just throw one quart of 20-50 in there when you do your oil change.
