Hey,
Need some big help from you guys....i had the problem with the alternator recently, I had the alternator and all the belts replaced and still i get a sound from the belt that turns the alternator, the sound gets worse when the lights or anything electrical is turned on...it's ok in the day if the car isn't cold...but from a cold start it makes a real loud squeal...when this happened before i thought it was just the belts breaking in and that they might squeak for a few days, this was not the case...in fact what happened was the alternator basically ate the belt...i got stuck on the highway without a belt, so no power stearing or cooling system at all, it sucked. after the replacement i still get the noise, the latest theory is that something is putting too much load on the alternator hence the squeal being louder when anything electrical is turned on in the car...keep in mind that there is no deck or anything that would draw a ton of power, is it a wiring problem???? has anyone else encountered a similar problem with a 91 tsi or is it just me and how do if fix this shit up???? anyone?
Thanks

andrewc897;
I responded to a previous post of yours on this same issue. I guess I mis-read that situation.
If the power steering pump and water pump are fine, but you have a squealing problem and actually broke a new belt, it pretty much looks to be a problem with a bearing on the alternator. I can't imagine any load on the alternator creating this problem, they are designed to crank out a certain number of amps and that is it, having a full load on the alternator is not going to cause it to break a belt.
It would be normal for the alternator belt to squeal right after start up, or with accessories on and the car idling...if the belt is not tight enough.

Hey Andrew, I have had the same problem....when ever your belts go like that and because the Talons are notoriuos for throwing the timing belts, you might want to check the tensioner pulley on the alternator. Mine went bad after my timing belt broke & beat the crap out of the alternator & its belt. Had to replace the pulley & the sqealing & cold start got immediatley better. I hope it helps.

hey!
This is simply a friend using this account for this one reply, just so you know. I had a problem with my 94 Talon recently. I was getting some crazy squealing from under the hood, so I just thought the belts needed to be replaced or tightened. I took it to a mechanic, and $200 later he told me that the alternator mounts were all seized up and that the pivot bolt was totally stripped, the threads were basically non-existant and the square head was almost a circle. So we finally got it back on, all tightened up and put on brand new belts. A few days later I got worse sqealing than ever before and I thought the belts were braking in and just needed to be tightend, I took it back and it turns out the alternator belt was being ripped apart and the alternator was loose again. Now, I don't know if this is because of the person that owned this car before me did not take care of the problem and now no matter what the alternator will come loose and I have to get a new one, or if I simply have to replace the pully. This was only yesterday, so we will see what happend to the belt for now. What do you guys think?
