Hello,
I am purchasing a new 520i A from my local BMW dealer here in Deutschland. Since I speak very little German, I have been following this list to prepare myself for this purchase.
I have two questions, that I would like to ask:
1. What is the E# for the NEW body style 5 series? I see E39 flashed about quite a bit, but I thought that was for the 97-Y2k model.
2. What the heck does the A in the 520i A stand for?
A website with a FAQ describing some of the basics for a new user would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that the A in 540iA means that it has an automatic gearbox.

go to www.bmwworld.com it's a really helpful website, they also have a section that describes all the BMW car codes such as E46, E39, etc.

If your 520i is new, it should be an E39. Other E numbers for 5-Series are E12 for '75 - '81, E28 for '82 - '88, and E34 for '89 - '95.
