OK, so i took my car in for some service like a month ago to my local nissan dealer. ever since i took my car in they have been hounding me about buying my car, and that it has passed their stringent used car buyback criteria. well today i got a letter from them saying that their records indicated that my maxima was approaching its 75,850 mi. tune-up?? i have done a little research on the maintenance schedule, and found nothing of a 75,850 mi. tune-up. are they just yanking my chain or what?

Certainly could be a miscommunication on what is a maintenance schedule. You didn't mention what mileage you had when you brought your car to that dealership for service. If, for instance, you had them do an oil/filter change at that time, most dealerships will track your mileage after that time and try to estimate 3,500 miles (or whatever figure they use) and send you a reminder.
The used car department might want your car- but only if you're willing to trade it in at a reduced price!

A lot of dealerships offer these maintenance schedules that do not match the maintenance schedules out of the Nissan manual as a means to increase revenues. Here is a maintenance schedule just FYI. http://www.maxima.org/shoptalk/sub_careandfeeding/mod_maintenance_sched/4th_gen_sched.shtml
Here is a link for the owner's manual in PDF format:

I would see exactly what they define as a "tune-up" and then decide. If it were me I'd save the money or do it myself.

We make software that allows you to track your scheduled maintenance easily. You can enter the maintenance schedule as reminders and then monitor the list of reminders for what needs to be checked. The reminders are setup with a distance and time limits. Check it out at
