My Exhaust Plans

Well, after peeking under there, it seems that the center pipe is about 2 1/4" OD while it after the split the pipes are about 1 7/8" OD. That seems pretty darn wimpy for a V-8. And from what I have read on here, the mufflers are somewhat restrictive. I'm going to start by cutting off the 'Y' pipe and putting on a 2 1/4" in and 2 1/4" dual out "T" pipe on there. I will maintain 2 1/4" pipe out through two higher flow mufflers and some non eye-catching tips. That will be stage one. If I move on to stage two, that will replacing the "T" with a 2 1/2" size inlet and replacing the center pipe with a 2 1/2" OD pipe leaving the primary muffler off. That seems more reasonable for a V-8. I hope that wouldn't screw with the low end or mid range too much to cause problems. I am looking at using the Hooker Aero Chambers or the Summit fully welded Turbo Mufflers. I am not looking to increase the sound too much. I built 11 different exhaust systems for my SVX before finally getting it right. This car's exhaust is infinitely easier to work on, but I'd still like to get it right on the first try. Any thoughts?

Good plan. V-8 yes, but only 244ci, so you only have to get out as much as you can put in. A small increase in pipe diameter equals a lot of flow increase. It's not like you can put on a huge four barrel. The throttle body will only allow so much CFM.

Thanks for the input Indy. I had to modify my plan slightly, as I am going straight to stage two because I found some Flow Tech Afterburner mufflers on sale for $19.99 a pop, down from $57.99. But they are in the 2 1/2" size so am just going to go ahead and use the 2 1/2" "T" pipe and replace the center pipe at the same time. I got the mufflers, tips and piping for $115 so far with just the center pipe left to buy, so I should get out of this pretty cheap. I have a G-Tech pro to check my before and afters. Should be interesting. I'll keep ya updated.

I would avoid the urge to use a full 3 inch center pipe(cat to "Y"), the ones that have, lost a lot of bottom end power. Maybe 2 3/4".

I agree. I think 2 1/2" should probably be fine since it is an increase over stock. I'm not interested in sacrificing my bottom end for a few extra hp at the top since it is certainly not a racer.

boy wonder...where did you find the flowtech afterburners for that price? what about the rest of the piping also? I'm thinking of doing some exhaust mods to my 98. I was thinking flowmaster deltaflow 50's. How do the afterburners compare for road noise? I want something that stays calm at low rpm/highway speed but has some growl when you step on it.
Thx..

I got them at a local Baxter's Auto Parts. I couldn't believe the price when I saw it on the net so I just ran down there and snagged them. Oddly, it was only the 2 1/2" size that was on sale. The cheapest I saw them anywhere else prior was at Summit Racing for $39.99. I don't know much about them, but they are fully welded and supposedly have a very nice sound to them, not too loud. I bought some mandrel bent sections from JCWhitney to finish it off along with some extra pipe pieces I have sitting around the garage. I don't want to make too much noise and the Summit guys steered me away from the Flow. 50's for the noise issues, even though they are quieter than the 40's. Oh well, I saved about $140 over a pair of those. I'll let you know more this weekend when I install it.

Thanks..I appreciate it and look forward to the results. I assume you are removing the resonator since this is "plan 2" for you??

I got the rear section done today, possibly saving the center section for later. I can't believe how much easier it was than on the SVX. It went together very nicely and no leaks. Has a very nice, low rumble like a muscle car V-8. Not too loud at all. I'll take some photos tommorrow after I put the tips on. The muffler outlets came out a little toward the inside of the cutouts, but its down so low and under there that you can hardly tell. I'll drive it like this for awhile and see how I like the sound and then I may go ahead and do the center section. I actually had it up on a lift today to get the center done in 2 1/2", but I decided against it because they were going to have to crush bend it around the offset. I don't see the point of replacing a mandrel bent 2 1/4" pipe with a crush bent 2 1/2" pipe. I may have get some mandrel bent "S" bends from Flowmaster to finish it off. I need two and they come in a pack of six for about $130 so if two other people want to go in on them with me, that would be awesome.
BTW- I did get a bone stock baseline 0-60 from my G-Tech at 7.86 seconds. With a bad off idle launch on a wet street. This particular G-Tech that I have has been found to be very accurate when compared with race track times as well as very consitent. More to come.

I did three runs after putting everything together. I even got my K & N panel filter in the mail today. The mods are airbox baffles removed, K & N, air temp resistor and the Flow Tech mufflers with 2 1/4" piping after the 'Y' pipe. It did 7.34/7.57/7.37 on the three 0-60 runs, down from 7.86 bone stock. The second run had some extra tire spin which resulted in a higher time. I ran the first run out to the 1/4 and got 15.59 @ 96.8 mph. Not too bad. Not the most scientific way of measuring the difference, but it looks to be about a half second. But this baby is fairly loud inside the car. That surprised me because I started the car up after cutting off the rear section before the 'Y' and it didn't seem that much louder than it is with the Flow Techs on there. But it has just a deep low rumble just like a big block. Well since it this loud, I may just go ahead and do the center pipe. How much louder could it get? It's not offensively loud because it sings a sweet note, but it is sure noticeable above 2000 rpm. But I can drive all week and not go over 2200 rpm. Total investment was $166. OK, now all I got left is a 125 hp shot of nitrous. YEAH RIGHT!

Here's some photos. I'm probably going to extend the tips out so they line up better in the cutouts.

That's OK, I just bought the car from out of state so it will be different next week.
