Tamiya Porsche GT3 - Finished

1 of 6 kits I started in 2003 that I hadn't got around to finishing. Told myself I'm not starting any new ones till I get them kicked out. One down, five to go. 2004 will be a clean slate.

Kit turned out pretty good. Window trim (as usual) is mediocre. Touched up as best I could. Probably the best paint I've laid down, but still could be better. This car is a gift for my father-in-law for his b-day. Go here for the build up.http://www.quietrage.com/cars/tam_gt3/tam_gt3.htm

Thanks. I used a mix of desert yellow and orange for these lines.

hey just a quick tip.. you know that you can "scratch off" dry tamiya flat/semi gloss acrylic after they're dry??

you can paint the window trims using tamiya acrylic and touch up by "scratching off" the extra paint using a wooden tooth pick.. that would give you a good sharp edge.

I've had experience with Tamiya paints and I can tell u that it is DANGEROUS to "scratch off" with a toothpick when all your final glossy paint work is alrdy done
cuz toothpick can remove your glossy coat as well!!! so if u really wanna fill out the edges, I suggest u to just use a bit of compound and taped the area that u dun want the compound to hve contact with.~

it would work as long as the body color is not tamiya acrylic. in this case the body color is tamiya lacquer so that would work. the wooden tooth pick is not gonna remove tamiya lacquer.. it dries too hard. there is usually a recessed area around the window trim so any minute scratch marks left by the toothpick are not gonna be noticeable.

I use this trick all the time.. check out the last picture I posted in my 360 spider build thread.. I used this to do the dash. the black is tamiya acrylic and the dash is testors enamel. as you can see the painting is perfect.

if the paint goes much beyond the trim you can remove the extra paint using a corner of a paper towel soaked with 91% isopropyl alcohol. after that clean up the edge with a toothpick.

Looks great! I got to get me one of these, I had the normal 996 911 awhile ago, back in the day. Tamiya really stuffed up on the fitting of the headlight lenses huh.

Great work! The only problem I have with it is the lights, I've only ever seen a GT3 with grey indicators, god knows why Tamiya said orange in the instructions.

The first GT3 were with orange indicators only the ones after i think '97(I'm not sure it was '97)were with the grey.
By the way really love the car especialy the color i love yellow porsche's

someone should replicate a 03 model by sanding off the headlights to fit the type in your sig dragonstyle... :D

The headlights and taillights did not fit well. I sanded down some corners, but realized it wasn't going to help much, so I just put them in. The instructions said orange indicators though the box art showed gray.

The kit does come with parts to build it as a regular 996 Carrera. I am thinking of getting the kit again to build it that way.

I feel yellow is the natural Porsche color, much like red is the natural Ferrari color.

I dunno if you could call yellow natural for Porsches, they look best in all colours.

Tamiya do make the normal 996 Carrera kit, I don't know if you can still get it but mine was only the stock one, I still have all the parts to build it but need alot of help to strip the body.

i reckon silver is the natural porsche colour. whenever you look at pics of the cars on the porsche site (for example the turbo or gt2), they are usually shown in silver... but meh

are there any porsche kits that come with an engine?

I'm in Texas. Tamiya Enamels and Gunze Mr. Color are not available in the US. Something about EPA regulations which don't allow them to be sold here. That's what my LHS tells me anyway. I get them from Japan. Hobby World and R10 have all colors in stock pretty much all the time. I don't like buying paint online (can't see the colors in person), but for these two, I've got no choice.

The 959 has the engine doesn't it? I reckon black looks the best on Porsches. One of my friends has an uncle with a black GT3, he also has a boxster for his wife and a red carrera coupe for when he doesn't drive the GT3. I think he sold the GT3 though because he had too much money for speeding fines on it.

Nice build! I like the yellow on the models and the real cars. One thing that may improve your car is to use a black wash on the wheels to bring out the detail. Check it out below.

My local Hobby shop gets all the Tamiya enamel paints, complete catalogue of enamels, military flats, glosses and primers. Although I amdit, its the only shop I have seen to carry them, and only because I kept nagging for a long time ;)

A new hobby shop that I've found in Billings MT has a ton of Tamiya enamel paints. I didn't know that other places didn't have them.

The Porsche looks hot. Great work with it. I think I found something you didn't do though. Did you paint the inside of the exhaust tips? From the pics it doesn't look like it, but it wasn't that great of a pic to tell the rear from. Anyways, great work, and nice shine.

No! the natural color of Porshes is SILVER! But they do look great in yellow. :naughty:

And don't worry about the turn indicator colors. Porsche will sell you the GT3 with either grey or orange- so do what looks best to you!
