'97 fuel pump blowing fuses

My '97 GL has blown fuel pump fuse twice now. Looking around the internet, it sounds like a somewhat common problem. Anyone know about this issue?

Can it be corrected other than by replacing the fuel pump? And how much should one expect to pay for replacement at local mechanic?

Any info. would be greatly appreciated!
